At the World Health Summit Academic Alliance Expert Meeting on “Climate & Wellbeing”, organised by NIMS University and UNDP, held on 24 August 2026, Dr. Monika Arora, Executive Director, HRIDAY & Vice President, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), joined experts from government, development and public health sectors to discuss how India can build a Climate-Smart National Programme for Prevention and Control of NCDs (NP-NCD).
Dr. Arora highlighted several priorities for moving from recognising climate-related risks to taking concrete action:
➡️ Long-term, sustainable heat action plans are needed to protect people living with NCDs, rather than relying only on short-term emergency responses.
➡️ Communities must be meaningfully engaged to take ownership of climate change mitigation efforts. Every person living with an NCD should receive appropriate guidance on thermoregulation, including condition-specific advice on hydration, monitoring, warning signs and care-seeking during exposure to extreme heat and air pollution.
➡️ Climate and NCD data need to converge. India already has meteorological data from IMD, air-quality, health and programme data, providing a platform for convergence and integration.
➡️ Climate change must be addressed as a multisectoral issue. The focus cannot be limited to estimating risk, we need to translate evidence into mitigation and adaptation measures.
➡️ There needs to be strong focus on policy and economic analysis to inform a comprehensive response to climate change.
The panel discussion brought together perspectives on extreme heat, air pollution, continuity of NCD care, climate-health surveillance and the need to strengthen convergence between existing national systems.

Strengthening partnerships. Advancing person-centred care.
The National Strategic Roundtable concludes with a shared commitment to strengthening collaborative action on cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic diseases.
Today's discussions have brought together diverse perspectives on prevention, integrated care, research, policy, capacity building and meaningful lived experience engagement, with the aim of advancing more integrated, equitable and person-centred responses to CKMDs.
We thank all speakers, participating organisations and stakeholders for contributing to this important dialogue and for helping shape the way forward for collaborative CKMD action in India.
Together, we can move towards care that is not only integrated, but also empathetic, equitable and centred on the people it serves.

During her Expert Address, Dr. Ashoo Grover highlighted the importance of translating research findings and learnings into programmes and policy.
“We need to take the findings and learnings of research into the programme. If we want to understand what works, what the barriers are, and how digital interventions can be meaningfully integrated, we have to go to the ground and understand the realities.”
She emphasised that while digital platforms offer significant opportunities, their impact depends on how well frontline health workers are trained, connected and supported to use these tools.
Equally important is ensuring that frontline health workers see how the data they collect translates into action and policy. When data becomes a pathway to decision-making, reporting can move beyond a routine task to become a tool for change.
Addressing NCDs, therefore, requires a multidimensional, multidisciplinary and multistakeholder approach, one that connects research evidence, programmes, digital innovation and ground realities.

Reimagining India's Response to CKMDs Prof. (Dr.) K. Srinath Reddy shares a vision for strengthening partnerships, prevention and person-centred care in India's response to cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic diseases.
“NCDs have been an expanding basket over the years.”
Prof. K. Srinath Reddy highlighted how the NCD landscape has evolved from the initial focus on four major diseases and four risk factors to a broader understanding that now includes mental health, renal and liver diseases, and oral health.
He also pointed out that debates around whether conditions such as hypertension and obesity should be classified as “risk factors” or “diseases” can distract from what matters most: their interconnectedness.
From obesity and insulin resistance to hypertension and cardiometabolic diseases, these conditions share common pathways and risk behaviours. This makes it essential to look beyond individual diseases and work towards integrated and collective action.
Prof. Reddy further emphasised that partnerships are vital to mobilise collective resources, identify common strategies and amplify the impact of individual efforts.
But meaningful partnerships must go beyond multidisciplinary collaboration. Translating them into action requires multisectoral efforts and meaningful multistakeholder engagement.
The meeting, therefore, provides an important platform to build consensus on future priorities and create multiple pathways and platforms for coordinated action on NCDs.
Together, collective action can move us from fragmented responses to a more coherent NCD response.

Young people may grow up in different social, economic and geographical contexts, but many share common aspirations: to be healthy, heard, respected and able to shape their own futures.
On International Youth Day 2026, under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” HRIDAY celebrates young people as partners in building healthier, more equitable and sustainable communities.
Meaningful youth engagement goes beyond inviting young people to attend an activity. It means creating opportunities for them to contribute ideas, participate in decisions, develop leadership skills and take action on issues that affect their health and well-being.
For over two decades, HRIDAY has worked to inform, engage and empower young people through school-based health promotion, youth-led communication, capacity building and participation in action on noncommunicable diseases and assocated risk factors, oral, mental and environmental health, and sustainable development.
Across different realities, young people share the aspiration to learn, contribute and lead. Our responsibility is to create spaces where their voices influence programmes, communities and decisions.
Listen to young people. Invest in their leadership. Build healthier futures together.

Building Better Interventions, Together: The SHIELD-A Co-Design Workshop
Today, HRIDAY and AIIMS, along with stakeholders, came together at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi), for the first Co-Design Workshop of the School-Based Healthy-Heart Intervention Program for Early Lipid Disorders among Adolescents (SHIELD-A), funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The workshop brought together diverse perspectives to strengthen the intervention prototype and ensure that it is relevant, feasible and responsive to the realities of adolescents and schools.
Through discussions and small-group design exercises, participants:
🔹Reflected on findings from focus group discussions and interviews
🔹Reviewed the proposed intervention components
🔹Identified barriers, facilitators, strengths and areas for improvement
🔹Proposed and prioritised modifications to strengthen the intervention
🔹Shared additional perspectives to guide the next stage of development
Co-design puts the people who will shape, deliver and experience an intervention at the centre of its development. By bringing these voices together, SHIELD-A aims to build a practical, context-responsive approach to promoting healthier hearts among adolescents, and a meaningful step towards preventing early cardiovascular risk in the next generation.

Turning community stories into pathways for better health.
As part of the Community Engagement and Involvement activities under the NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions, the Nepal team conducted its third participatory health-awareness drama in Dadhikot Gamcha, Nepal.
Performed by MBBS students from Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital, the street drama engaged more than 50 community members through a relatable story exploring multiple long-term conditions, particularly asthma and diabetes.
Through the journey of Shanti and her family, the performance highlighted the importance of:
🔹Recognising symptoms and seeking timely healthcare
🔹Challenging disease-related stigma and the normalisation of women’s pain
🔹Supporting women’s right to make informed health decisions
🔹Understanding Electronic Medical Records and telemedicine
🔹Adopting healthy lifestyles and following appropriate treatment
🔹Sharing household responsibilities when a family member is unwell
🔹 Using health insurance to reduce the financial burden of long-term conditions
The drama used familiar language, local experiences and interactive questions to make complex health information accessible. Audience members connected the storyline with their own lives, with women reflecting on their right to seek care, men discussing the importance of supporting an unwell spouse, and community members expressing greater awareness of Nepal’s National Health Insurance scheme.
At HRIDAY, we are proud to contribute to this multi-country collaboration and support culturally grounded approaches that move beyond information-sharing to encourage dialogue, reflection and meaningful community participation.
Together, we are strengthening community voices and advancing more equitable, people-centred care for individuals living with multiple long-term conditions.
