People of the Hills Now Living in Fear: Indigenous Students
“Incidents of rape are taking place not only in the hills but also in the plain lands. The Interim Govt could not provide safety to women. In the hills, an eighth-grade schoolgirl was raped.
Although one person was arrested, no one knows how far the trial has progressed. Those who took to the streets to demand justice were instead attacked. Fire was set, lives were lost. People of the hills are now living in fear.”
Speakers made these remarks at a solidarity rally at Cheragi Mor in #Chattogram city on Friday afternoon to protest the latest wave of violence in #Khagrachari.

The recent unrest in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region started when an indigenous girl was gang-raped. This led to protests by organisations of students from the indigenous communities. Rather than investigate the crime and arrest the criminals, the security forces chose to inflict further violence on the indigenous youths, shooting dead three and injuring scores. See:

This was further exacerbated when the Home Adviser of the Interim Govt baselessly blamed India and “fascist forces” for the unrest. A govt hospital even claimed that no evidence of rape was found. These further outraged the students and the victim’s family.

The #Yunus Govt’s Convenient Fallback: “Blame #India”.
It appears that the Yunus-led Interim Govt has a convenient fallback whenever confronted with its own failures and incompetence- blame India.
Recently, three members of the indigenous community were shot dead and several others injured when security forces opened fire during protests in #Khagrachari, following the rape of an indigenous girl. Widespread, racially motivated attacks on indigenous-owned businesses also took place. See:

Instead of investigating this bloodshed and holding the perpetrators accountable, the Interim Govt’s Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury claimed that “certain quarters are attempting to create instability in Khagrachari with backing from India or fascist groups.” As usual, no evidence was provided to substantiate this conspiracy theory. This is far from the first instance of the Yunus-led Interim Govt scapegoating India. Yunus and his allies have repeatedly deflected criticism of their governance, such as failure to protect the religious minorities in Bangladesh, by blaming “Indian misinformation.” In a recent interview with journalist @mehdirhasan, Yunus even remarked, “One of the specialties of India right now is fake news.” See:

The “blame India” narrative has even extended to natural disasters. In Aug 2024, the Interim Govt and its supporters claimed that India deliberately flooded Bangladesh by releasing water from the Dumbur Dam in Tripura. Blaming India to distract from domestic failures has long been a feature of Bangladesh’s political right- from the #BNP and #JamaatEIslami, to the #NCP and now the Yunus-led Interim Govt. It serves as a convenient dog whistle, appealing to populist sentiment while obscuring governance lapses.
But at what cost?
This habitual neighbour-blaming, unsupported by evidence, risks inflicting lasting diplomatic damage between India and Bangladesh, undermining a partnership that has been crucial for regional stability, security, and development.

Six British MPs Raise Alarm Over “Deteriorating Human Rights” in #Bangladesh Under the #Yunus Govt.
Five members of the House of Commons and one member of the House of Lords have written to the UK Govt and voiced serious concerns over the worsening #humanrights situation in Bangladesh under the Interim Government of Muhammad Yunus.
In their letter, the parliamentarians highlighted several urgent issues: systemic failures in the #justice system denial of bail, politically motivated detentions, the exclusion of certain parties from the upcoming #elections, and rising violence- including targeted attacks against #minorities.
The MPs urged the British Govt, particularly @FCDOGovUK, as well as the @UN and the wider int’l community, to press the Interim Govt in Bangladesh to meet its obligations under int’l human rights law, including ensuring access to justice, protecting civil liberties, and ending impunity.
They also called for a “clear and time-bound pathway” towards peaceful elections and the restoration of a stable civilian govt, which they stressed is “essential for rebuilding trust and accountability.”

At Least 30 #AwamiLeague Leaders and Activists Die in #Custody Under #Yunus-Led Interim Govt: Families Allege #Torture, Medical Neglect, and Denial of #Justice.
Since the Interim Govt led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed office in Aug 2024, an alarming pattern of custodial deaths has emerged in #Bangladesh.
According to documented reports and testimonies from bereaved families, at least 30 leaders, activists, and supporters of the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organisations have died while in the custody of law enforcement agencies or prison authorities over the past 14 months.
These deaths have occurred under highly disturbing circumstances, ranging from alleged torture during raids or interrogations to deliberate denial of adequate medical treatment in prisons and hospitals.
Families consistently report that authorities either ignored urgent health concerns or actively obstructed access to proper medical care, raising grave concerns of systematic abuse and neglect.
The most recent case, the death of former minister Nurul Majid Humayun, has once again drawn public attention to this escalating #humanrights crisis. Humayun’s family has alleged that prison authorities deliberately delayed his treatment, and when he was finally transferred to a hospital, he was denied appropriate care for dengue fever. They argue that this directly contributed to his untimely death.
This tragic case is not isolated. Family members of numerous other deceased detainees have leveled similar allegations:
- Torture during interrogation leading to fatal injuries.
- Negligence or outright denial of medical treatment for critical conditions such as heart disease, respiratory illness etc.
- Intimidation and obstruction when families attempted to seek justice, including prevention from filing legal complaints regarding the deaths.
The sheer scale of these custodial deaths of political detainees within such a short timeframe is unprecedented in Bangladesh’s history.
Even troubling is the complete absence of accountability. To date, the Interim Govt has not initiated any official inquiry or investigation into these deaths, despite repeated appeals from affected families, civil society, and rights activists.
The pattern suggests not random negligence, but rather a systematic policy of repression targeting political opponents. Such actions not only constitute serious violations of fundamental rights under the Constitution of Bangladesh, but also amounts to violations of int’l human rights law, including the Convention Against Torture (CAT) 1984, which Bangladesh is a signatory to.
In light of these deeply concerning developments, human rights activists, civil society groups, and legal experts have urgently called on the Yunus-led Govt to:
- Establish an independent judicial inquiry into all custodial deaths since August 2024.
- Ensure accountability by prosecuting law enforcement and prison officials found responsible for torture, neglect, or denial of medical care.
- Guarantee immediate medical access and legal rights to all detainees, regardless of political affiliation.
- Allow families to file cases freely and protect them from harassment or intimidation.

Will there be accountability for the 321 Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters killed in the past 15 months?
Between Jul 16, 2024, and Oct 01, 2025, at least 321 leaders, activists, and supporters of the #AwamiLeague (AL) and its affiliated organizations have been killed. These deaths stem from multiple sources, including:
- Extra-judicial killings carried out by LEAs.
- Custodial deaths in jails under suspicious circumstances.
- Assassinations by rival political groups or parties.
- Politically orchestrated mob lynchings.
The scope of the violence is staggering. Of these killings, at least 143 occurred in less than a month, between Jul 15 and Aug 8, 2024.
The perpetrators of these deaths have been granted total immunity from prosecution by the #Yunus Regime via a controversial indemnity. On Oct 14, 2024, the Home Ministry of the Interim Govt issued a notification stating that no cases could be filed, nor arrests made, for “any actions by students and general people between Jul 15 and Aug 8 in furtherance of the movement.”
This blanket indemnity effectively legalized murder for a defined period of time.
For the remaining 177 killings between Aug 8, 2024, and Sep 22, 2025, an unofficial policy of impunity appears to prevail. This manifests in several ways:
- Denial of justice at the outset: Police refuse to file cases, and families of victims are frequently prevented or intimidated from lodging complaints.
- Token registration of cases under pressure: In rare instances where public outrage forces the authorities to register cases, investigations are deliberately stalled. Perpetrators are neither arrested nor prosecuted, creating a façade of legality while maintaining impunity.
- Systematic neglect of custodial deaths: At least 30 AL leaders, activists and supporters have died in jail custody to date under highly suspicious circumstances, pointing to something more sinister than mere negligence. Allegations of torture, medical neglect, and deliberate inaction suggest institutional complicity.
At its core, the right to life is the most fundamental human rights obligation of any state. Yet the #Yunus Govt’s consistent failure to protect the lives of individuals based solely on their political identity or perceived political affiliation takes the issue far beyond ordinary human rights violations.
The pattern of killings - widespread, systematic, and sustained over time and geography - combined with evidence of targeting, coordination, and the formal grant of indemnity very likely meets the threshold of crimes against humanity under int’l criminal law.
The questions that follow are inescapable:
- How long can a govt escape accountability for a campaign of killings on this scale?
- Will the int’l community recognize these crimes for what they are and act before further lives are lost?

Impunity for “July Criminals” in #Yunus’s #Bangladesh
Criminals appear to enjoy complete #impunity under the Interim Govt of Muhammad Yunus- as long as their crimes target individuals linked, directly or indirectly, to the #AwamiLeague.
On Oct 1, 2025, the residence of former MP Nur Uddin Chowdhury Noyon (Laxmipur-2 constituency, General Secretary of AL’s Laxmipur District unit) was attacked for the fourth time in just 14 months.
A mob identifying themselves as “July Warriors” - a term used for participants in the July–Aug 2024 protests- stormed Noyon’s home in the Women’s College area of Laxmipur, setting it ablaze. They arrived with a truck, looted household belongings, and even assaulted local journalist Forhad Hossain for attempting to document the incident.

This was not an isolated case. On Augu 4, 2024, Noyon’s house was first attacked and set on fire, even before the ouster of the AL Govt. On Aug 5, 2024, the residence was torched again, accompanied by widespread looting.
On Feb 6, 2025, for the third time, the house was looted and burned, alongside hundreds of other properties belonging to AL leaders and activists across Bangladesh in a two-day long orgy of wanton violence and destruction.
The pattern is unmistakable. The Aug 2024 and Feb 2025 waves of violence saw thousands of homes and businesses of AL leaders, activists, and supporters targeted.
Instead of prosecuting the perpetrators who use their Jul-Aug 2024 movement credentials as a shield, the Interim Govt of Yunus indemnified those responsible for crimes committed during Jul–Aug 2024, and has since allowed a de facto immunity for continued attacks against the Awami League.

Why is the launch of an expensive service being touted as a success by the #Yunus Regime when 99% of the people would not be able to afford it?
Starlink launched in #Bangladesh officially today with two monthly packages worth BDT 4,200 and 6,000 respectively. This is more than triple the costs of broadband and mobile internet. Additionally, there is a one-off initial cost of BDT 47,000 (around US$ 385) for installation.
This makes @Starlink extremely expensive, if not unaffordable, for the majority of Bangladeshis. Even those who can afford it would not necessarily pay more!
The question thus arises, why is this development being publicised massively by the regime including Yunus himself like a revolution in terms of internet connectivity?
Is this what they have to show for after holding on to power forcefully without elections for more than nine months?

Third, one of the first actions of the Yunus Govt was to reverse the ban on #JamaatEIslami. Since then, under full patronage of the regime, Jamaat has become one of the most visible political forces in Bangladesh with its Ameer Shafiqur Rahman emerging as a key confidante of Yunus. The party now enjoys huge influence within the administration and managed to install Jamaat supporters in key govt and state positions, including the judiciary. See:

Fourth, Yunus made one of the top leaders of the country’s largest Islamist orgs, #HefazateIslam, one of the advisers (minister-level) of his advisory council (cabinet). AFM Khalid Hossain, the former Vice-President of HeI, was appointed as the Religious Affairs Adviser of the Interim Govt. See:

Sixth, allowing Islamist extremists and their fundamentalist allies to morally police society on their backward philosophies.
