Guys. The US administration is also punishing Rwanda through AGOA for standing up to them. They're punishing Canada through trade for the same thing. Their trading approach is aggressive, maximalist and bullying. The loss of AGOA access was probably going to happen.
As the news of South Africa’s suspension from AGOA settles, remember to treat AfriSol and AfriMaga’s with the contempt they deserve. They are trying to blame this on our government when their lies are what got us here. Turn them into pariahs, that is what traitors deserve.
Trump Administration is literally lecturing South Africa about corruption 🙄. Trump's kids have gotten richer since he became President, people buy pardons etc
South Africa, in response to AGOA termination, says it had offered fresh concessions to US trade officials in their latest talks, but the Trump administration had raised "new issues" that it had never tabled before. (If so: pretty difficult to negotiate under those conditions.)
"Successive US administrations have used AGOA eligibility as a stick to discipline African governments. It's unclear if this works, and very clear it imposes big costs on African economies."

IMPORTANT: The removal doesn't mean SA loses access to the US market. It means South African exports will no longer enter duty-free under Agoa & will instead face the US’s standard tariff regime, the normal duties applied to countries without a preferential trade arrangement.
"[T]he Trump Administration is deeply concerned by barriers to U.S. trade and investment, corruption, and threats to U.S. national security and foreign policy interests." In others words, the Trump Administration is deeply concerned about the conduct of the Trump Administration.
