🇮🇳 An aspiring, achieving, & assertive new India

Kevin Pietersen, former England cricket captain, reflects on India’s transformation since he first visited in 2003. He writes about a growing national confidence, a broader and deeper sporting culture, including the rise of women’s cricket, and a strong commitment to wildlife conservation. He also notes that India has hosted the world’s largest cricket stadium and the world’s tallest statue, led the UN’s International Day of Yoga, and established the International Big Cat Alliance.

Pathway from Georgian Chidaoba to Indian Akhara

Vladimir “Lado” Mestvirishvili, a Georgian freestyle wrestling coach, arrived in India in 2003. He spent nearly two decades working with Indian wrestlers and helped shape a generation of champions. He mentored Olympic medallists viz. Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya. 🏅

In 2026, India posthumously awarded him the Padma Shri, its fourth-highest civilian honour. He is the first foreign coach ever to receive a Padma award.

His story shows how sport can build lasting bonds between nations, from Georgian chidaoba to the Indian akhara. 🤼

Embassy of India, in coordination with NGO for Cultural Diversity for Peaceful Future (NGOCDPF), hosted an evening of Indian classical dance at the Rustaveli Theatre in Tbilisi on 23 October 2026. About 150 guests including Georgian officials, member of diplomatic corps, distinguished guests from business, academia, media and civil society, along with Indian diaspora and students attended the event.

Trikayaa Dance Foundation, an Indian Council for Cultural Relations group, blended two classical traditions, Mayurbhanj Chhau of Odisha and Bharatanatyam of Tamil Nadu, in three segments. “Samagam” opened with an invocation to Lord Ganesha and celebrated the many colours of India. “Shiv Shakti” honoured Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti, the cosmic force of creation. “Bharatam: From Exile to Eternity” told the Ramayana’s story of Lord Rama’s journey and the triumph of dharma, ending with his return to Ayodhya.

The performance showed the shared spirit of India’s classical traditions and the warm cultural ties between India and Georgia.
