This week @RwandaNGOForum conducted a visit to the @KigaliMentalHRC to learn more about and better understand ongoing interventions supporting people who use drugs (PWUD) in mental health care, psychosocial support, treatment, rehabilitation services and community outreaches
The visit reaffirmed the critical role KMHRC plays in saving lives and restoring dignity through evidence-based, health-centered approaches to substance use disorders.
We commend the Govt of 🇷🇼 through @RwandaHealth@nsanzimanasabin@RBCRwanda@CMuvunyi and the Centre @DynamoNdacyayis for its leadership in providing integrated comprehensive health care that recognizes PWUD as clients in need of treatment, not punishment reinforcing that substance use is a public health issue requiring structured health and social support services.
As part of strengthening Harm Reduction and treatment adherence, @RwandaNGOForum donated water filters and UV water sterilizers to support access to safe drinking water for #PWUD receiving Methadone Assisted Treatment (MAT).
▶️ Access to clean water during MAT administration is essential for safe consumption and better adherence, directly contributing to improved treatment outcomes and reduced health risks.
▶️ Special appreciation to our partners who supported this great initiative.
Key note:
————-
This visit noted the urgent need for:
1. Increased and sustained investment in comprehensive, community-centered and facility-based services for PWUD, including mental health care, MAT programs, psychosocial rehabilitation, awareness, capacity building, evidence generation and reintegration services.
2. Strengthening supply systems, infrastructure, human resources, community led interventions is critical to scaling up impact and saving more lives.
A Call to Action:
—————————
We call upon government, development partners and implementing agencies to:
✳️ Prioritize and invest in healthcare systems and expand accessible, integrated quality healthcare services for PWUD at both health facility and community levels.
✳️ Meaningful engagement of families, parents, local leaders and general population remains important in supporting adherence, reducing stigma and strengthening long-term recovery pathways
✳️ Support and create an enabling environment for PWUD that place health, safety, dignity and human Rights at the center of responses to drug use.
✳️ Invest in Research; Surveys; Integrated Community Led Monitoring aimed to generate evidences for decision making in programing and policy change

Bridging Care Through Collaboration: Rwanda NGOs Forum Visits Kigali Mental Health Referral Centre
When recovery is the goal, no single institution can walk the journey alone.
This week, @RwandaNGOForum paid a courtesy visit to the Kigali Mental Health Referral Centre (@KigaliMentalHRC ), not as observers, but as partners committed to standing alongside communities too often pushed to the margins, especially people who use drugs.
Our visit was anchored in three intentions:
🔹 To explore concrete areas of mutual collaboration that strengthen treatment and recovery pathways.
🔹 To listen to and understand the real challenges KMHRC faces, and where civil society can help bridge them through community mobilization and family engagement.
🔹 To witness what works: best practices, treatment successes, and the lived experiences of beneficiaries whose voices remain central to meaningful care.
The recovery process is not only clinical. It is dignified care that meets people where they are.
In that spirit, @RwandaNGOForum provided water treatment materials, ensuring patients, including people who use drugs, can access safe drinking water while receiving services at @KigaliMentalHRC . A small contribution, but one rooted in a larger truth: dignity lives in the details.
At the heart of this engagement is a conviction we hold firmly: that collaboration, partnership, and genuine co-creation with community members are how we close the gaps across the entire continuum of care for key and vulnerable populations.
When families are engaged, communities are mobilized, and lived experience is honored, recovery becomes not just possible but shared.
Together, we bridge care.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day 28th May
Today, as Rwanda joins the world in observing Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, we reaffirm a simple but powerful truth: menstrual hygiene is not a privilege, it is dignity, health, and a fundamental human right. Every girl and woman deserves access to accurate information, affordable menstrual products, clean water, safe sanitation facilities, and supportive environments that allow them to manage menstruation safely and confidently. Yet, stigma, silence, and limited access to menstrual hygiene services continue to affect the education, well-being, confidence, and opportunities of many girls and women across the world.
This year’s #MHDay2026 is a call for collective action in our schools, homes, workplaces, and communities. We must continue strengthening menstrual hygiene management in schools through access to WASH facilities, safe spaces for girls (Icyumba cy’Umukobwa), menstrual products, and reproductive health education, while also creating supportive workplaces and homes where menstruation is discussed openly and respectfully.
Together, let us break harmful myths, end period shame, and build a #PeriodFriendlyWorld where no girl misses school, no woman faces discrimination, and they can manage menstruation with safety, support, confidence, and dignity.
