#ATDF2024 “To enhance intra-African trade, we need to use the opportunities brought about by digitalisation to simplify interactions, foster trust and make trade across borders cost-effective. These initiatives may be facing some challenges, but this doesn’t mean we stop. We need to start somewhere, by integrating digital platforms for efficiency and connecting Africa. Let’s collaborate to make it happen.”

#ATDF2024 “We are working towards rolling out a digital transformation strategy that will harmonise coordination of various elements, including trade. Significant progress has been made in the trade sector. Our goal is to remove cross-border trade barriers. We are also focusing on data protection and privacy to ensure safe trade.”

#ATDF2024 “Digitisation plays a critical role, particularly in AI, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. We haven’t fully explored these technologies yet, and we should do so to understand how they work.
We also need communities to adopt payment systems, so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
The potential for intra-Africa trade is enormous, but we need connectivity to unlock it.
Why don’t we establish non-stop border posts to enable seamless digital trade and allow goods to move across borders without stopping?”

#ATDF2024 “What we have learnt from Europe that perhaps Africa can emulate is that regional economic communities (RECs) and a digital single market are the building blocks for continental integration. This will be a major enabler for the actualisation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).” - Belén Calvo Uyarra, European Union Ambassador to Rwanda.

#ATDF2024 “We need to address security threats to enable proper trade. Many countries are focused on politics, while we should be focusing on the economy. When prosperity is shared across borders, everyone becomes invested in protecting peace. We should make economics the anchor of politics.”

In an early morning discussion today at #ATDF2024 the @EUinRW Ambassador to Rwanda @BelenCalvoEU shared insights on how regional collaborations can grow and thrive, drawing on the #EuropeanUnion’s own journey toward integration. She emphasised the EU's commitment to unlocking economic opportunities through partnerships not just within the EU but also in #Africa seeing it as a shared pathe.
@BelenCalvoEU touched on the transformative impact of digitalisation, explaining how, for example it has reshaped how countries within the EU trade with each other. She shared how by defining a Digital Single Market, the EU has tackled issues such as secure financial flows and robust data protection—elements she described as the "lifeblood" of digitalisation of trade effort; and which provide lessons for other REC's.
Emphasizing that these digital strides are not just technical achievements but that they are important in supporting the ease of doing business, like through electronic contracts. These innovations, could offer valuable lessons for Africa’s own regional integration efforts, painting a picture of a more connected and economically vibrant continent. The Ambassador was joined in this discussion by @jumuiya 's @SMannette1@Erastus_Mwencha@jasbedikenya@PascalLamyEU UN's @ozonnia
Regional economic communities (RECs) and a digital single market have been instrumental in Europe’s success. Africa can adopt this model to fully actualize the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Let’s work together for a connected, prosperous continent.
