At the Oslo Freedom Forum @OsloFF, Rémy Amahirwa shared the deeply personal story of his mother, @VictoireUmuhoza, describing how her political persecution has evolved into a broader suppression of her religious freedom.

Rémy recounted how Ingabire returned to Rwanda in 2010 to challenge President @PaulKagame in the presidential election, only to be arrested, prevented from running, and imprisoned for eight years. During her detention, she endured solitary confinement, restricted contact with her family, and harsh conditions intended to break her spirit. Although she was released in 2018, she remained under restrictions and was later re-arrested in 2025 on new trumped-up charges, facing the possibility of life imprisonment.

A central theme of the discussion was the role of faith in sustaining Ingabire. Rémy described her as a devout Catholic whose religious convictions have given her strength throughout years of imprisonment and political repression. The Rwandan authorities now seek not only to punish her politically but also to isolate her spiritually by preventing her from attending church services or worshipping with other prisoners.

The conversation also broadened to concerns about religious freedom in Rwanda. Rémy highlighted the case of Kizito Mihigo, the popular gospel singer who was imprisoned after advocating for the right of all victims' families to mourn their loved ones. He further noted that thousands of churches have been closed in Rwanda since the introduction of restrictive regulations in 2018, raising concerns about increasing state control over religious communities.

The discussion concluded with the idea that faith can provide a source of resilience that authoritarian regimes often struggle to suppress. Despite years of imprisonment, separation from family, and renewed prosecution, Ingabire's commitment to her beliefs and her vision for democracy in Rwanda remains unbroken.

sélective.
Nous appelons solennellement les autorités françaises :
▶️✅à promouvoir une mémoire inclusive de toutes les victimes des tragédies rwandaises ;
à refuser toute instrumentalisation politique de la mémoire ;

▶️✅à faire prévaloir les principes universels des droits humains sur les considérations
diplomatiques ;
▶️✅à soutenir les efforts de vérité, de justice et de réconciliation pour l’ensemble des peuples de
la région des Grands Lacs ;

▶️✅à accompagner les aspirations légitimes du peuple rwandais à la liberté, à la démocratie et à l’État de droit.
Nous espérons que ce mémorial deviendra un véritable lieu de recueillement pour tous les Rwandais victimes du génocide et des autres massacres qui ont endeuillé le Rwanda et les Grands Lacs, et qu’il servira la vérité historique et la réconciliation entre les peuples plutôt que les intérêts d’un régime. Les monuments survivent au gouvernements : ils doivent être au service

Congratulations Bota! Your case exposes a transnational repression tool authoritarian regimes have systematically weaponized against dissidents in democratic states.

Kagame’s Rwanda @RwandaGov ran the same playbook on US soil. Eugène Gasana, former Rwandan ambassador to @UN, was hit with an @INTERPOL_HQ Red Notice in 2020 on charges NY law enforcement had already declined to prosecute. Interpol’s own review found it “predominantly political” and cancelled it.

Paul Rusesabagina was targeted by Rwandan intelligence in the US as early as 2011. A classified @FBI report confirmed Rwanda was feeding false intelligence to US agencies to get dissidents deported. The FBI found the allegations baseless. Rwanda kidnapped him anyway in 2020 and Kagame called it “flawless.”

Same mechanism. Different institutional responses. Catastrophically different outcomes. Belgium’s courts held. The US system didn’t. That gap costs lives.

Listening to Rémy and Rist speak about their mother, @VictoireUmuhoza, reminded us that tyranny does not only imprison individuals; it affects entire families and societies. Yet courage, dignity, and hope can never be jailed.

One of the most powerful lessons from #OsloFreedomForum was that our struggles are connected. Whether in Venezuela, Rwanda, Tibet, Russia, Cameroon, Nigeria, or elsewhere, those who stand for freedom, human rights, and democracy recognize each other instantly.

The solidarity shown between political prisoners, exiles, and oppressed peoples from different corners of the world was a powerful reminder that our fight is universal.

Thank you for carrying their testimony with you. For a free Venezuela, a free Rwanda, and freedom for all those living under oppression.
