Deputy Director of Legislative Strategy @DCFPI focused on homelessness. When I'm not thinking about policy, I'm knitting and glue-gunning. Views are my own
At least since 2019, DC budget advocates have begged for revenue hearings to be incorporated into the budget process. When you criticize tax proposals at this juncture of the debate, keep that in mind. And, newsflash, the mayor also tucked several tax changes into her BSA.
Additionally, what I think lots of locals will be looking for is any consistent maintenance of federal monuments, memorials, and fountains after the America 250 celebrations. NPS has a pretty big deferred maintenance funding problem, after all.
Any policy that calls for upfront funding set-asides for addiction counseling, domestic violence services, & debt mitigation to address known side effects should be a red flag for us all.

Mayor Bowser wants to cut DC's paid leave program so workers can't take paid leave for their own or a loved one's serious illness or injury from Oct 1, 2026-Sept 30, 2027. Medical needs don't take a year off and neither should DC's paid leave program. https://t.co/RRF3LvXuqI
An important thread from @ShiraDC2 about growing DC’s economy from the bottom up and middle out and shoring up the financial well-being of the workers who power DC’s economy, and not the corporate elite.
How do we thrive? By supporting critical safety net programs and ensuring that DC residents have what they need.
Follow along for a look at the COW process, and a deeper dive into the programs we are supporting today!
Good morning and happy COW day! Yes, like the animal, but we are talking about the Committee of the Whole. We are at the Wilson Building today to discuss the entire budget and to remind our council that the budget is a moral document and that DC deserves to thrive.
As I'll testify at Counciltoday, DC is set to spend nearly $191m over the next 4 years on tax abatements & fee reductions for corporations. More spending on disproven trickle-down growth strategies won’t result in better outcomes for residents. https://t.co/KhuqSQThBP
On May 20, we are joining @Under3DC for an advocacy day and rally to protect programs that help families access child care, paid leave, and health care. Join us! https://t.co/QkfvZ8Kn5E
JUST IN: Inflation is now eating up all wage gains for the first time in about three years. This is painful for Americans and a true financial squeeze.
CPI Inflation in past year: 3.8%
Wage gains: in past year: 3.6%
Reporter: “To what extent are Americans’ financial situations motivating you to make a deal? [with Iran]”
Trump: “Not even a little bit…. I don't think about Americans’ financial situation”
Last week, we delivered 1,000 postcards from DC residents to the Wilson Building to remind Council that TANF is still a lifeline.
Despite the program’s proven role in reducing hardship & supporting well-being, DC lawmakers approved TANF cuts.
