Our new blog is out!
Poverty isn’t just about a lack of income—it’s a complex web of interconnected deprivations across dimensions like health, education, and housing conditions. In this @WorldBank blog post with @ViktorStojkoski, @kbbolch, and @almudenaf, we discuss how network science can help us map and understand these connections, capturing the structural relationships among different dimensions of poverty.
In many countries, policies targeting poverty tend to be isolated within sectors, overlooking how one deprivation affects others—for example, how a lack of electricity affects education. By applying network science, we introduce two new concepts:
1. Poverty Space: a visual representation that maps out the structural relationships between various dimensions of poverty
2. Poverty Centrality: a measure that assigns an importance score to each dimension within the network
Just as acupuncture targets a few strategic nodes in the body’s system for holistic impacts, targeting the right policy nodes could allow policymakers to potentially create ripple effects across multiple dimensions of poverty.

To bring poverty back at the center of public debate on development, @almudenaf@kbbolch@EspinosaFranc@RobertoAnguloS@sabina_alkire shared with LAC Ministers innovative policy approaches to accelerate poverty reduction as a precondition to build a resilient human development.
It was a pleasure to participate in the #ForoMinisterial2024 to discuss innovative approaches on #data for #poverty eradication and to share our work at @WBG_Poverty on real-time monitoring of welfare.
Thank you to @pnud, @cepal_onu, & #Barbados government for the invitation!
Please join us tomorrow for the launch of our new report and numbers - in person for World Bank staff and online for everyone else. (This has essentially been the last 10 months of my life! Luckily, Maria Eugenia and I had a brilliant team!)
Great opportunity to learn about the findings from the latest @UNDP Human Development Report and hear from an excellent line up of speakers about what this means for international cooperation and collective action going forward.

How can we implement integrated policy responses for multidimensional #poverty reduction?
A key challenge is understanding how the different dimensions are interlinked and how they jointly evolve over time.
In my recently published @WorldBank Policy Research Working Paper co-authored with Victor Stojkoski,
@kbbolch and @almudenaf, we use network science to propose two new measures for understanding the interconnected structure of multidimensional poverty: the Poverty Space and Poverty Centrality.
We show how the Poverty Space can be applied in policy-making and emphasize the relevance of using network science methods to help to identify key “nodes” in the structure of multidimensional poverty where targeted interventions could have a greater impact.

Tax Day. A good day to note that US taxes (income taxes & social insurance contributions) push many low-income households into poverty. New paper by me, @DaveBrady72@IveMarx & @ZParolin reports that US taxes push a larger % of adults into poverty than do several other countries.
