Of all the horrors of #COVID, the prospect of millions of people with with #LongCovid is one of the worst. But it's been hard to get a handle on clinically.

@whignewtons I did some additional numerical analysis on SCOTUS decisions รก la the SVD you talked about on AO - how should I share? I sent an email to David's NYT email, but not sure if he checks that, and couldn't find any other obvious contact info
It's finally out! https://t.co/hKCPd3YyP1
Amzing work @MCFWoodruff @Katia_Faliti @LaboratorySanz !

@MicrobiomeVIF@svetlana_up Answering your question from event chat (did COVID-19 affect us?) - Yes! A lot. We lost a ton of kids to follow-up and about 9 months worth of collection for everyone.
@OfficialLoganK @spennyanderson @JuliaLanguage I think the main reason to start using julia is if you don't have everything you need and might want to do some package development.
One of the really amazing things about trying julia out is the interop, so if you want to keep using your python code (PythoCall.jl), you can!
@lwpembleton This was great, thanks! I've been trying to do this for a few weeks, and this got me there!
One thing that tripped me up - you didn't say explicitly that the *compute environment* needs the S3 / other permissions. I had it on the user, but was having auth problems.
I treasure the education I got at UCLA as a graduate student, but I burned through my entire savings to be there for just 3 years and only made it back as a professor many years later. Sending solidarity!
@ArundelXVI@dankloke@pelorat@BarumDean @SteveHowe42 @pescami You and I aren't fighting.
And listen, I'm just doing some mastodon boosterism, not trying to recruit you. My favorite part about it is that it's not trying to be everything for everyone. By all means stay on Twitter until it implodes - I probably will too if I'm honest.
@SteveHowe42 @ArundelXVI@dankloke@pelorat@BarumDean@pescami Just don't feel bad if you get bagged from certain spaces. Like, rugby is great for the pitch, but if you start playing it in a library, people are going to get upset.
If you want both, make alts for different instances, that's totally grand ๐
@SteveHowe42 @ArundelXVI@dankloke@pelorat@BarumDean@pescami No need to apologize - I should have said, "pretty great *for me*." You want to get into the scrum, I wouldn't dream of stopping you. And there are totally places in the fedi where you can brawl or watch the brawl... 1/2
@dankloke@pelorat@ArundelXVI@BarumDean @SteveHowe42 @pescami It's a bit challenging when lots of the Twitter diaspora doesn't yet understand that mastodon the software is not synonymous with https://t.co/klN9SoVNiI
But I'm hopeful that with just a little bit of time, folks will sort it out
All of this makes sense to me, but context really matters - there isn't only one kind of "coding." Some people code websites, some code kernels or embedded systems, others code data analysis and plots.
1/ Many will tell you why Python is great for teaching coding, so I'll tell you ways it's not.
State is a bad default. It should be legal but safe & rare. The arc of programming is long and bends towards immutability. Its early use creates messes (eg, "a variable is a box".) โต
Mastodon has just passed over 2 million active monthly users, a new record! People are voting with their feet. The future of social media doesn't have to belong to a billionaire, it can be in the hands of its users.
@ArundelXVI@BarumDean @SteveHowe42 @pescami They certainly can. Which is why it's great that there are so many patches to take up residence on. And easy to make your own to be a petty or benevolent dictator of your own ๐
Some people ask us why Mastodon isn't a single website. A single website that can serve the whole world requires so much computing power, infrastructure, and engineering, that it is practically impossible to do without big capital and monetization.
