@MariaMurphy103@janieserna3 I agree that we could use objects from our classrooms to draw connections to shapes. Like a door being the shape of a rectangle, or the shape of their desks/tables. This builds on knowledge and lets them connect it to real life #OSUElemMath
@janieserna3 A29: I think that using non standard things that are standard sizes can be good. Like a piece of paper, that is always 11 in. long can bring up ideas of standard units in a non-standard way. We learned about how your thumb is usually an in. wide so we could use that as reference.
@rachelsuttonosu@WenzelCassidy I agree. Modeling is good if it is done in an effective way where children are still allowed to think. If we model but then follow with simple direct instruction we are stifling the problem solving skills that students already have. #OSUElemMath
@WenzelCassidy I think that nowadays technology is a huge way to communicate with parents. Almost everyone has access to technology so using blogs and apps like Remind is great. If they dont have access traditional newsletters are also great. #OSUElemMath
@WenzelCassidy I was never able to do this in school. But I think that doing problems like how we do them in class where we give a problem and let them go allows them to build this knowledge on their own a realize new ways to solve problems #OSUElmMath

@EllieStammen A13: I think that having the students work on a problem and then have a conference with each other is a good way to show their thinking. If the teacher doesn't give the answer then the students can explain their process to each other without fear of being wrong. #OSUElemMath

@mikusamouse A9: I have definitely heard the myth at children have to learn math concretely and not in any abstract form. I think that one way to combat that this is to have math conversations about more complex topics from an early age. This can expand critical thinking skills early on.
