Today was my last day with @IRIglobal - a wonderful 5 years with some of the best people I know. Thankful to have played a role in promoting representative and enduring democracies with the @IRI_es team.
For now, a bit of a break. Excited for whatever may come next.
New newsletter: THE MONKS IN THE CASINO
In the last few decades, the pro-social life script for many young people—date, marry, buy a house, have a kid—has become more expensive.
Meanwhile, the anti-social life script—e.g., posting, porn, parlays—has become easier, cheaper, frictionless.
This has created an unusual inversion of risk. Today's young people—and young men, in particular—have become more risk averse in the physical world and more risk-seeking in the digital world. They date less, and gamble more. They find intimacy scary and betting exciting. They furnish their rooms like high-tech monasteries and gravitate toward media that works like a slot machine.
I don't think young men suffer from a "loneliness crisis." I think the problem is bigger and stranger than that. They are choosing to be alone, because economics and technology have made aloneness feel easy and togetherness feels anxious. The result: A generation of monks in a casino.

Congreso aprueba reforma constitucional que da poder total a Ortega
#Ortega y #Murillo serán "copresidentes" y vigilarán medios e Iglesia.
También crearán una "policía voluntaria", en un régimen "revolucionario" y "socialista". /rr

Electoral data overwhelmingly demonstrate the will of the Venezuelan people: democratic opposition candidate @EdmundoGU won the most votes in Sunday’s election. Venezuelans have voted, and their votes must count.
The nerve of the Venezuelan regime… their fraud is so lazy and incompetent that when they went to fabricate Maduro’s fraudulent “victory” they gave three candidates the exact vote percentage: 4.6% (the probability of this happening is infinitesmally small). And, predictably, they are so bad at arithmetic that the official vote tally adds up to more than 109% of votes cast. Most democratic governments are declaring that they view these elections as fraudulent. Dark days ahead.
Mexico: I cannot think of another Latin American country besides El Salvador where one party has won this much power through the ballot box.
Sheinbaum wins by 30 pts, her party controls 24/31 governors, likely super-majorities in Congress to change Constitution.
PT NEVER had this much power in fragmented Brazil even when Lula had 80%+ popularity; neither did uribismo at its high water mark in Colombia; nothing like it in Argentina. You could point to Barbados, where Mia Mottley's party won every seat in parliament
Hope she uses it well!

@tuckcomatus I got back from a trip early this morning and my heart honestly sank that I was about 10 hours too early to use the new metro stop at Dulles.
Big shout out to all election volunteers today, especially those at Meyer Elementary in DC’s Ward 1! Voting there was simple and quick this morning.
Reminder if you’re registered in DC, you can vote at ANY voting center regardless of your home address. Polls close at 8 pm!
