@jamestanton Might be worth specifying that the dots are non-overlapping, or that they have equal radius, or whatever other conditions you are assuming. Pretty easy to do given the lack of constraints.

@Rafi3AK For me it’s that if we redefined naturals to not include 0, we would almost immediately come up with a new set of numbers that is 0 and the naturals, and name it, because we would immediately get tired of how often we needed to describe that set the long way.

@abdimoalim_ I would say math shouldn’t feel that way - it isn’t useful. But authors have to make choices about what to include. I’d say that’s why books are often part, but not all of instruction. A competent instructor will spend the in-person time priming learners so the book has value.

@PhysInHistory Group Theory. It has a really low barrier of entry - most people are comfortable thinking about how things can be symmetric, and how you can rearrange the order of things. It also has a big bang for that buck in my opinion when it comes to being comfortable with mathy reasoning.

@LindaMeadWrites @thechosenberg There’s at least a third type, they brought the shovel, bought you a shovel because it seems like you often find yourself in these situations, and must pick who they do this whole shovel thing for given that others have done more with their shovels and you keep needing shovels.
