Britain restored the gold standard in 1821, pegging sterling at £3 17s 10½d per troy ounce, and the following decades gave you one of the most instructive experiments in monetary history: falling prices coexisting with explosive real growth.
Prices fell. Roughly 50% between 1820 and 1850 by some price indices. The textile mills of Manchester kept expanding. Railway track mileage in Britain jumped from virtually zero in 1820 to over 6,000 miles by 1850. Real wages climbed. The orthodox panic about deflation, the kind you still hear from central bankers today, would have predicted stagnation. Instead you got the industrial revolution, accelerating.
The mechanism is simple once you strip away the Keynesian fog. Deflation under a gold standard reflects genuine productivity gains: producers squeeze more output from the same inputs, and prices fall because goods become cheaper to make. This is healthy deflation, not demand collapse. The cotton spinners of Lancashire caused falling yarn prices through innovation.
Sound money advocates have always stressed this distinction. Falling prices from productivity growth reward savers, keep capital costs honest, and force businesses to earn their profits through efficiency rather than inflating their way to margins.
The British experience between 1821 and 1850 is an inconvenient data point that modern central bankers quietly ignore: a hard currency, shrinking prices, and the fastest sustained economic expansion the world had yet seen. Simultaneously.

Investors are pulling capital out of energy funds at a rapid pace:
US energy sector ETFs have posted -$4.0 billion in outflows over the 65 trading days ending Monday, the largest such outflow since mid-2025.
This marks a sharp reversal from the record +$12.5 billion in inflows seen in March.
By comparison, the 2025 peak outflow was -$5.5 billion, while the 2023 record was -$7.5 billion.
Meanwhile, the energy sector ETF, $XLE, has posted -$797 million in outflows so far in August, putting it on track for the largest monthly withdrawal since April 2025.
That would also mark its 5th consecutive monthly outflow.
Investor appetite for energy exposure is fading rapidly.
💔Derrick Moore, 47, a beloved elementary school teacher and father of four from Loganville, Georgia, gave his life on August 7, 2026, to save a young girl he had never met.
While at Myrtle Beach, SC, he saw the child caught in a powerful rip current after lifeguards had gone off duty. Without hesitation, he ran into the water, pulled her to safety, and then was swept under himself. His body was recovered the next day.
He was known as “Coach” to his students at Rockbridge Elementary. Colleagues and family describe him as a man who always showed up with a smile and a heart ready to help.
He didn’t know the little girl.
He just knew she needed saving.
Rest in power, Derrick Moore.
True hero. Forever. 💔🇺🇸🫡

UPDATE | Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that the Caspian strike "cannot go unanswered." Writing on X, he accused Ukraine of acting at Israel's behest to drag Europe into its war.
Kyiv has now addressed the cargo. Ukraine's ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, told the broadcaster N12 that the ship was carrying drone and missile components bound for Iran, and that Ukraine treats those shipments as legitimate targets. In the Russian readout of his call with Araghchi, Lavrov said the vessel had begun its voyage from Astrakhan.
The ship itself is still unidentified. No name, flag or IMO number has come from either government, and the two vessels named in Ukrainian reporting are both on the register as Russian-owned. Tehran describes an Iranian merchant ship with an Iranian crew, and those two accounts have not yet been reconciled.
(Reuters) - A Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone that had entered its airspace on Friday, President Nicusor Dan said, the first time the NATO member state has done so following a series of such incursions.
One ship. Countless stories.
