#OsloForum#Norway FM Espen Barth Eide: The consequences of many armed conflicts are global - as with the US-Israel-Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. It has affected us all in terms of fuel and fuel prices, fertilizers and so on.
#OsloForum#NorwayMFA FM Espen Barth Eide: the Oslo Forum is about sharing experiences of mediation and facilitation about what works and doesn’t work. #Norway has been engaged in this field for a long time and seeks partnerships with countries like #Kenya. @NOREFno
@vali_nasr Though this famous Lancet study does not focus specifically on Iran, it does provide the first comprehensive global assessment of mortality due to international sanctions over 4 decades (1970-2021) of a shocking 38 million people. https://t.co/q5ZmNsXKi3
@SandinoVictoria at the @BerghofFnd event: the state-centered focus of the #WPS Agenda sometimes obscures women’s popular movements, partisan and combatant women. Secondly, the agenda tends to produce and limit women to 2 key roles: as victims and as pacifists. @prioGPS
What is the social contract for universities in the 21st century? We have to rethink how we serve society, focusing in new ways on collaboration, equity (within and beyond institutions) + the 'intentionality' of our missions. Inspirational Distinguished Lecture by @FunmiOlonisakin
How transparently lawless are members of the U.S. Congress to threaten sanctions against the International Criminal Court for possibly charging Netanyahu. Why should Netanyahu's war crimes rise above the rule of law? https://t.co/4NpdYXpfna
7- Set up a #crisiswatch of the Levant.
In #Lebanon, #Iraq, expect Iran-affiliated groups to get stronger & govnmts weaker. #Jordan’s stability is also at stake, caught between 2 foes: Israel/Iran. An already conflict-torn #Syria, is the most likely arena of 🇮🇱 🇮🇷confrontation
6- Revamp support for Arab initiative to end #Israel ongoing war in #Gaza. #SaudiArabia can be an important ally, having now ties to #Iran and having hinted at normalization with #Israel.
With #US/#EU support, #KSA can help balance and moderate #Israel/#Iran competition.
5- Build & consolidate backchannels to #Iran security establishment to understand its logic moving forward.
Countries, like #Oman, who have solid experience of dialogue with #Iran and can help in this.
4- Rethink #EU approach to #Iran and #Israel.
De-escalation is a *process*, achievable with a constant engagement with both parties in conflict. Picking the phone only on a brink of a crisis won’t work.
3- Support regional channels of dialogue that can help #Iran and #Israel to define the *new unwritten rules* of confrontation.
This includes: Limits for both sides/type of responses/targets, geographical scope.
The goal is to reach lower levels of *unpredictability*.
2- Engage with countries in the region— and most importantly with #GCC members— who want to avoid #Israel-#Iran further escalation.
They are #Europe’s best partners at this time.
1-Issue balanced statements. True, #Iran attacked #Israel. But #Israel was first in bringing the escalation to a different level launching attacks on #Iran consulate in Damascus.
Blaming it only one side limits #Europe’s policy options. #EU needs to speak to all sides.
