The killing of three people and injury of many others by police during protests against the planned public participation on the Ikolomani gold mining project by Shanta Gold Kenya Ltd. is tragic and unjustifiable. This crisis sits squarely at the feet of NEMA @NemaKenya, which seems determined to conduct the exercise merely for the record rather than ensuring meaningful engagement on this important constitutional principle.
When NEMA first issued the notice for public participation, the 987-page feasibility study was not uploaded on their website. Instead, the public was given the options to travel physically to Nairobi or Kakamega to access it and read it from NEMA offices. In the second notice, no link was provided either, until some of us raised the alarm, after which the report was finally uploaded, two days to the date.
The community rejected the exercise scheduled for 12th November 2025. Yet instead of reflecting on this rejection and addressing legitimate concerns, NEMA attempted to force another meeting yesterday. Now the police are all over the village harassing young people in Ikolomani to get the community to, I believe, submit to this forced process.
I am calling on the Inspector General to immediately recall the rogue police officers who are in the villages in Ikolomani destroying property, beating up residents, breaking into homes, and committing violent crimes against innocent people.
NEMA must also step back and conduct due diligence on the process Shanta used in conducting the feasibility study, particularly interrogating the so-called stakeholder consultations.
The KNCHR @HakiKNCHR should send teams to Ikolomani to interrogate the process underlying the feasibility study conducted in March 2025 by Kurrent Technologies Limited and Digby Wells Environmental Pty Ltd. from South Africa.
To the CS Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, my brother Hon @HassanAliJoho, the people of Ikolomani are human beings with rights; please don’t allow matters of your ministry to be conducted over the innocent blood of community members. I know you to be a fighter for the rights of local communities over their resources. No amount of gold is worth a single human life. What is the rush? Let’s allow proper consultations and protect communities instead of enabling noncaring foreign investors who may not be acting in the public interest to obliterate whole communities for minerals that do not belong to them.
I wish to extend my deepest condolences to thw families who have lost their loved ones and stand in solidarity with all those injured and traumatised by this violence.
