Only in America could a scientist from Greece rise to lead one of the world's great scientific companies. I have never taken that for granted, and I think about it even more as America turns 250.
This country has always had a gift for making bold bets that changed the world. The moon landing, the internet, the Human Genome Project. These milestones and so many others came from generations of Americans who chose to invest in science and a belief in a brighter future.
Today, America faces a choice once again.
New tools in biology, from how we design medicines to how we manufacture them, have already expanded what is possible for patients. AI will shape what comes next in ways we are only beginning to see.
Tools alone donโt determine outcomes. It requires investing in innovation. It requires committing to shaping future opportunities. The coming decade will determine where great new discoveries occur and where the most ambitious scientists build their life's work.
I want the answer to be here. Other nations have serious scientific ambition, and I welcome it. Competition never scared America. It has always made us better. You donโt win races by trying to hold others back. You win by running faster, running harder.
Americaโs opportunity is to continue leading by investing more, building more and moving faster. Pfizer will continue doing its part. We were founded in New York in 1849, and we have been competing and betting on American science ever since. We are driven by a single purpose: delivering breakthroughs that change patients' lives.
My wish for America's 250th birthday is simple. Let us choose, once again, to bet on ourselves โ and on science. No nation has ever done it better.

Re ex-USA copycats, we need free markets, not bans. However, for blatant cases, because patents move so slowly, there can be a role for government to incentivize economic settlement by advantaging the USA company administratively. This is where we need creativity and discussion.
Maybe we give harmed companies a true regulatory speed advantage-automatic fastest review. Or we let firms that can show administrative harm (not in patent courts) capitalize their NOLโs. Or if there is a protest to a pharma deal that is a blatant foreign rip off, they must buy a voucher from the harmed company to proceed (all administrative, no court)
The first people to copy Beam and Prime were not Chinaโ they were USA start-ups and Pharma, who will pay eventually. Pharma has been copying biotech forever.
But a system that enables Pharma or others to cherry-pick foreign blatant copies with no economic cost is also not fair, as it essentially dries up money for USA fundamental innovation.
We are absolutely reducing our investing in platforms because we are starting to get eviscerated before we get to the finish line.
Ultimately, maybe it is an evolution of the market, but there is a National Interest in preserving biotech innovation, the USA controls almost entirely the market for drugs, and having some system that advantages those who take risks for long term innovation is good policy.
โItโs good for consumersโ was the exact excuse when we let our manufacturing base hollowed outโฆ hope we donโt do the same with โitโs good for patientsโ logic. Iโve strong believe and trust in the scientists and startups here in USA whose success would be great for patients too.
Well, fund like RA and RTW have a fiduciary duty to make money for their LPs. They are doing their job.
Now, US lawmakers need to do theirs.
Offshoring our R&D is a direct national security risk. By funding foreign science over US startups, we:
โ Kill domestic biotech jobs
โ Starve our own innovators of capital
โ Become dangerously dependent on rivals for life-saving medicine
We must invent and build at home! ๐บ๐ธ
If cost is the excuse, tap into the talent and affordability of Middle America. We already made the catastrophic mistake of outsourcing our manufacturing base for cheap goods. Let's not repeat it with our medicine.

This tactic of offshoring to low cost scientific labor in China is going to fail. US biotech startups are going to prove it, weโre not giving up without a fight.
@AppleHelix Much needed initiative for the sub $5m seed deals. If some of these companies succeed, it will create the flywheel effect considering the early valuation and ROI potential.
Thereโs a reason that DNA synthesizers are export-controlled. However, the most concerning applications and sequences are, ironically, not the most obvious. A sensible policy is to screen the users and orgs, more so than the specific sequences being made, as far as threat vectors go.
