African founders need to understand even VCs are running a business.

Earlier this year, about 10 slots opened up at YCombinator for blockchain companies, courtesy of Coinbase, and I (+@deriq_eth) fought all we humanly can to get 2 of the most matured African startups in the list.

During the interview, YC asked one of them - "how big is the market you're serving?" At the time, 80% of their customers were from Africa. YC turned them down with a note "once you expand your client-base globally, pls get back to us."

Today, that startup is aggressively expanding into Latam & EU.

The conditions are not ideal, but VCs don't see the African market as big enough to take a bet. That is the problem.

If you’re doing both email and SMS OTP during onboarding, it might be time to yank the SMS OTP.

Email OTP may be enough to get your users through onboarding.

Once they’re in, you can simply mark their phone number as unverified and give them a reason to verify it later.

Here’s how:

Build a WhatsApp bot that listens for incoming messages.

When the user chooses to verify their phone number in your app or website, generate a unique verification code and save it against their user ID.

Then give them a WhatsApp deep link that opens a chat with your bot, with the verification message already prepared.

Something like:

“Tap send to verify your number. Verification: verification_Code”

The user taps send.

Your bot webhook receives the message, picks up the verification code, checks it against your database, and performs whatever validation your business requires.

And here’s the part I really like:

The bot doesn’t need to reply.

The user initiated the conversation.

You’re not sending an OTP first. You’re not initiating an unsolicited WhatsApp conversation. And you’re not paying to send a message just to get the user to respond. You are not spamming.

You’ve basically flipped the OTP model:

Instead of Business → User

User → Business

You can even use email to communicate the verification status afterward.

It’s a simple idea, but depending on your use case, you can build a lot around this.

Let the user initiate the verification.

And while we’re at it, if you’re doing bulk messaging, don’t use WhatsApp for everything.

Use a Telegram Bot.
