Preliminary report on genomic epidemiology of the 2024 H5N1 influenza A virus outbreak in U.S. cattle https://t.co/hRSOg5oIVs
Main preliminary findings:
- Reassortment event within North American avian H5N1 viruses shortly before start of cattle outbreak
- Cattle outbreak likely had single origin from avian H5N1 reservoir
- H5N1 outbreak in cattle likely went undetected and unidentified for extended period and is now several months old
- Cattle outbreak may have originated in Texas
- Multiple putatively adaptive mutations in the cattle H5N1 clade polymerase
Our paper on SARS-CoV-2 origins and recombination is finally published at GBE @GenomeBiolEvol@OfficialSMBE !! https://t.co/ij2ZgRyCkY Here's a lengthy 🧵 about bats 🦇, sarbecoviruses 🦠, recombination 🧬 and the origins of a nasty pandemic:
If you're meeting up with friends/family this holiday season remember: LFTs are valid for hours ⏲️, not days 📅. Take your test as late as possible before you set off/meet up!
Keep loved ones safe - be the one to break the chain. ⛓️
And: even a faint line is a positive! ➕
It seems that the common assumption has been that Omicron will displace Delta, just as Delta displaced Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc... before it. This may well be the case, but it's by no means definite. 1/15
There have been a number of overview threads on the emerging variant designated as @PangoNetwork lineage B.1.1.529, @nextstrain clade 21K and @WHO Variant of Concern Omicron. I'm not going to attempt to be comprehensive here, but will highlight a few aspects of the data. 1/16
After ~10 months of relative quiescence we've started to see some striking evolution of SARS-CoV-2 with a repeated evolutionary pattern in the SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern emerging from the UK, South Africa and Brazil. 1/19
Following up on general thoughts on antigenic drift of #COVID19 from this weekend, I wanted to discuss what we know about the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 thats emerged in the UK. 1/17

I am so happy this piece of work is out! 🥳

In light of @MRC_Outbreak report on US and UK #COVIDー19 epidemics, better tools for containment are needed to prevent additional waves. As @trvrb and others note, a technological solution should be developed. Singapore govt has just launched the Trace Together app. 1/n
I've been mulling over the @MRC_Outbreak modeling report on #COVID19 mitigation and suppression strategies since it was posted on March 16. Although mitigation through social distancing may not solve things I believe we can bring this epidemic under control. 1/19
