The most important finding is that a significant fraction of brain microglia arise from bone marrow, updating the view from Ajami 2007 that it's all local brain self-renewal.
Their estimate of ~28% across 20 humans is rough, but the important thing is >>0%.

Where do aging-related changes emerge in the brain?
A new @NatureAging study identified a population of microglia (the brain’s immune cells) that appears specifically in old mice and carries signatures of both cellular senescence and disease-associated inflammation.
These cells were concentrated in white matter, particularly the fimbria near the hippocampus. Targeting p16-expressing cells or BCL2 reduced this microglial population and partially restored a more youthful cellular organization.
The study did not test cognition, but it suggests that some aging-related changes in the brain arise in specific anatomical niches and may be partially reversible.
