I never met Jason Arday, and know nothing about him beyond what I have read, seen and heard in the media.

As the debate around him raged in recent weeks, I stayed out of it, precisely because it struck me as one of those occasional frenzies in which facts get lost and humans cease to be treated as humans. I now wish I had reached out to him, tried to encourage him that “this too shall pass.”

Many people today, those who knew him above all but also many like me who didn’t, will be feeling sadness and anger that this has all led to his death, a family suddenly without a father, parents without a son. None of us will ever know exactly what was going through his mind, but it is hard to disagree with @MayorofLondon that Jason Arday faced “an unacceptable public hounding and campaign of abuse … pernicious public shaming that other people in his position wouldn’t have faced.”

Whatever the truth of the allegations against him, would he have suffered such a hounding had he been white, with short hair? I doubt it. The zeal with which the Trumpian anti-DEI brigade in the U.K. leapt on this story to try to push back the wheel of progress towards genuine equality was horrible.

Again, Sadiq is right to say “His death was a tragedy but it should be a wake-up call for all of us.”

RIP Jason. And to all of us, if ever you think someone you know may have cause to be suicidal, reach out to them.

I will not share my last exchange with Jason but I hope that all who hounded him feel the weight of that every single day.

And I hope that we wake up to what has happened and is happening.

Jason Arday is dead.

They spent weeks stripping him bare. The race realist who started the fire. The Telegraph. The Spectator. Every line of his thesis, every fundraising claim, every mile he said he ran, every threat he described... forensic, relentless, turned into sport. A Black working class autistic man who reached a Cambridge chair became their perfect scalp. “DEI darling.” “Fraud.” The glee was the point.

He resigned under the weight of it. Said the unrelenting scrutiny and personal attack had reached the limits of what any person should endure. Nine days later he was found unresponsive at home in Battersea. Unexpected. Not suspicious. Forty one years old.

This is how the right works. When someone from the estates, the wrong skin, the wrong neurotype climbs into their institutions, they bring the full apparatus. Every error is a national scandal. Every exaggeration is proof the whole project of equality is a lie.

Meanwhile their own misdemeanours and crimes get the soft treatment. Boris Johnson lied to Parliament about parties while the country locked down... process, delay, shrug. The PPE VIP lane handed billions to Tory donors and mates for kit that never worked while NHS staff went without. Michelle Mone and the rest still counting the money. Serial sexual misconduct and bullying by Tory MPs protected until the last possible second. Farage’s endless grifts and contradictions waved through by the same papers that demanded Arday’s head.

They don’t care about integrity. They care about hierarchy. Accountability is a weapon they point downward. The powerful stay protected. The climbers get destroyed.

Jason Arday faced the spotlight they never shine on their own. The rest of us saw it. We remember. The real scandal was never one academic’s record. It was the double standard that keeps the powerful safe while breaking anyone who challenges the order. That is the fight.
