Shared some thoughts w/@lbarronlopez about why the US must do more to protect not only Ukrainian refugees but also the predominantly Black & brown refugees- Haitians, Cameroonians, Syrians, Central Americans &others- who continue to be left out in the cold https://t.co/DH4Qg9k7Mt
For decades, the immigrant rights movement in Massachusetts has been fighting for the passage of this bill. Today, we can finally celebrate🥳🥂
We also want to give a huge shout-out to @CosechaMovement@BeyondBondBos@DrivingMA4ward@NeverAgainBOS and the countless others...1/2
Thank you to the 120 state reps who just voted for the Work & Family Mobility Act!
Mobility is a basic right, and we are all better off when everyone on the road has been tested and insured. A big win for our immigrant communities and for all of us. #mapoli#DrivingMAForward
Seems to us like maybe @RepBradJones wouldn't be trying so hard to sabotage the bill with amendments if he didn't think it was going to pass.......... 🧐
We are watching the floor debate in legislature on the Work & Family Mobility Act, which immigrant leaders in MA have been fighting for for almost two decades. Thank you for the leadership and courage that has brought the bill so far, @CosechaMovement and @DrivingMA4ward! #mapoli
Lots of great testimony in favor of the bill today, especially in the face of bad faith amendments trying to turn the bill into a backdoor registry of undocumented people in MA. Thankfully, the majority seem to be seeing through these amendment sabotage efforts.
Another amendment from @RepBradJones in bad faith -- he seems to assume that people will use driver's licenses to commit crimes and voter fraud, and not to just drive without fear.
Rep Straus explained that non-citizens (eg green card holders) can get driver's licenses right now and it doesn't impact their ability to vote. It's a fake problem.
Thank you for the clear rebuttal and opposition to this pointless amendment, Rep Straus!
We are pleased to see that Rep William Straus has been providing clear explanations of what the bill does and does not do, in support of helping the bill to get passed without unnecessary amendments. @RepBradJones is wrong to think Work & Family Mobility would impact voting reg.
@RepBradJones is making a barely coherent argument for an amendment to create more red tape for immigrants seeking licenses, on the off chance that someone could use a license to try to register to vote.
