'Pageant fever' gripped 20th-century Britain. Leicester's pageant of 1932 featured 6000 human performers (as well as horses, mules, donkeys, dogs, hawks & a boar) acting scripted episodes from Leicester's past, from 50AD to 1882, over nine days. 2/2 https://t.co/TI5410C2WT

In 1932, Leicester's historical pageant imagined a scene from 1265: citizens are moved by the news of Simon de Montfort's death at the Battle of Evesham to proclaim him a martyr and saint. 1/2
