Thank you @BrookingsEcon for sharing our recent research on how customer ratings perpetuate workplace inequality leveraging 1.5 million transaction and 0.3 million customer reviews from a national casual-dinning chain.
As customer reviews become increasingly critical for shaping work hours and compensation, an overlooked question arises: How might customers drive inequality in the workplace?
In a new article, Qiuping Yu details how customer feedback can fuel harmful biases.

@VinceSlaugh@BrookingsInst And would love to chat more on this perhaps at a future conference. I know you have also been working on this and meet/speak to many people in the hospitality sector :)
Just-in-time scheduling helps reduce labor cost for firms, but also leads to highly unpredictable and unstable schedules for workers. In this @BrookingsInst policy brief, I explain how policy makers can design predictable scheduling laws that benefit both workers and companies.
“Just-in-time” scheduling disproportionately affects lower-paid U.S. workers in the retail and service sectors. @QiupingYu offers guidance on creating predictable scheduling laws. https://t.co/weNeoYZ1Yl
@VinceSlaugh@BrookingsInst That’s a great point, Vince! Outdoor scheduling is a lot more difficult. This gives more reasons why the predictable scheduling laws should NOT unnecessarily require advance notice of two weeks, and A Few days is the best way to go for both workers and firms.
@VinceSlaugh@BrookingsInst Thank you, Vince! Is Canlis the fine-dinning restaurant in Seattle? Do they also do JIT scheduling to their workers? I would imagine they do this less due to high expectation on customer experience. Interesting.
@robseamans@BrookingsInst Thank you so much for sharing the article, Rob, and all your comments and suggestions along the way to make this piece possible!

Millions who are affected by the earthquake are dealing with harsh weather conditions. 10 cities are affected, and the resources are spread thin. If you consider donating, the Turkish embassy and consulates in the U.S. also collect in-kind donations.
Mark a great conference @INFORMS2022 It was awesome to catch up with so many friends and colleagues. Until next time! (View of Indy from my hotel room, cannot complain 😉)
