The Ethiopian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has been accused of genocide and destabilization in the Red Sea-Horn of Africa region, persists in its aggressive military activities in Tigray, which may provoke another severe conflict.

On the morning of August 20, 2026, at 11 AM local time, a drone strike conducted by the Ethiopian government targeted civilians, including children and women, in Mekelle, the national capital of Tigray. Eyewitnesses and local media reports, which provide visual evidence, indicate that civilians, including children and women, sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at Ayder Specialized Hospital in Mekelle.

I had no idea who Teklebirhan Araya was until four years ago when I saw him on Tigray TV, where he appeared as chairperson of the TPLF’s Audit and Control Commission. His intervention was unprecedented, an informed and courageous act from within what had long been perceived as a monolithic party. Curious, I asked around, from the old guard to the younger members within the party, and everyone told me the same thing: he had always been a principled fighter.

I invited him to appear on UMD Media more than once, and he did. Beyond that, we continued our conversations off the record. His discipline, analytical mind, and depth in reading and writing were truly remarkable. Sometimes he would simply call to check in. Other times, he would share books with me, always thoughtful in his choices, such as Global Economic and Cultural Transformation: The Making of World History by Mohamed Rabie, and Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism by Yanis Varoufakis. He would ask whether I had read them, eager to exchange ideas and perspectives.

He also wrote and published a booklet of his own, appealing to TPLF cadres to reflect critically and make informed decisions about their political direction. It was a sincere effort to spark internal accountability and reform. Sadly, it did not achieve the impact he had hoped for. In the end, he chose principle over position, accepting being sidelined and ultimately pushed out for holding the TPLF politburo to account.

His humanity was just as striking as his intellect. During social and religious holidays, he would reach out and ask how we were celebrating, even from afar. He once told me about his background as a physics student and how his passion for the natural sciences had never left him. He believed in diversity of views and remained hopeful, truly hopeful, that one day the people of Tigray would experience freedom and democracy.

It is deeply painful that he passed away before witnessing even a glimpse of that hope.

I learned of his passing while in transit in Bangkok on my way to Bhutan, where I am scheduled to conduct a week-long training. As I carry out this work, I will be thinking of him, a man who moved from being a guest on UMD Media to someone who became, in values and spirit, like family despite the distance.
