📐 Organization
• Pitch: 70x40m with 2 full-sized goals + GKs.
• Central Area: 30x16m split into 3 zones (larger middle zone).

⚽ Explanation
• Possession Phase: Orange looks to play through the central zone to their teammates at the opposite end.
• Defending Phase: Green (middle) & active inside Yellow press to block lanes and win the ball.
• Transition Phase: When Green/Yellow win possession, they instantly attack main goal.
Wide Yellows activate immediately to join the counterattack, while Orange can break out of their zones to defend.
💡 Coaching Points
• Attacking Transition: Look forward immediately—exploit space before the defense recovers. Wide neutrals must stay sharp on the shoulder of the defensive line.
• Defensive Structure: Identify when to press vs. delay. Nearest player presses the ball carrier while supporting defenders offer depth to prevent overhead passes.

What are the currently most underachieving rugby nations and furthest away from their potential taking into account financial & talent resources?

Tier 1: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England. This has always been by a distance the richest Union in rugby. They had revenues of £228m in 2024/25 (whilst complaining of being "cash strapped" and their CEO lobby to reduce funding for Tier 2), that is about £100m more than the second richest Union France.

To have such a colossal financial advantage and yet have fewer Six Nations Grand Slams than either Wales and Ireland, only 2 wins in last 9 against Scotland, and to be cheating the rules to poach a South African 5th choice centre, ought to be faintly embarrassing. A Union of their financial power being top 4 in the world ought to be par.

Their flawed development system that narrows down the player pool too young, their disrespect and lowering of standards of pro club rugby both in Prem & Champ, has led to them being less able to exploit the advantages they have and unable to match the depth of France. For all this woeful underachievement and failure to fix the system, they rewarded their CEO Bill Sweeney with a £1.1m salary, not even that far off football to make him one of the very highest paid blazers in British sport.

Tier 2: 🇼🇸 Samoa. They have the second largest pool of top level eligible professional players of any Tier 2 nation. Nearly all that player pool got the benefit of the top level youth coaching and development of the most successful rugby nation in the world. They have some of the most genetically suited talent to the sport anywhere in the world. They got the eligibility rules changed so they could pick ex-All Blacks. They shared with Tonga a team in Super Rugby. They got other projects like Pacific Combine or the Pacific Challenge paid for by World Rugby for them.

All of that gives them a considerable advantage over other Tier 2 Unions who would love to have been given such projects and yet .... due to their corrupt and incompetent management they nearly didn't qualify for RWC 2027 at all only sneaking past Belgium on pts difference.

They also despite having such amazing natural talent on the island, had an U20 team that lost 123-15 to Scotland and 81-7 to Japan when they played in the U20 Trophy in 2024, and only produce single digits of top level pros that are homegrown. The Union is a total shambles and been responsible for a load of designated "Tier 2" funding over the years effectively circling the drain.

Tier 3: 🇩🇪 Germany. It might be slightly harsh to call any "Tier 3" nation really underachieving, considering none operate on significant financial resources and so the underachievement discussed here is not remotely on a level with the other two sides mentioned, probably merely disappointing a better term. Germany is a country that has the advantages of being first world, a reputation for being physically strong and well organised, proximity to France, and being in Europe the region with the most concentrated set of active rugby nations.

Yet they have been clearly outperformed and overtaken by both Belgium and Netherlands (who they have lost 12 of their last 13 matches against combined), and more recently Switzerland (who they have lost 3 of their last 4 matches against). Those are all nations who Germany should be expecting to be more on a par with at least.

They also have not always reliably turned up to Rugby Europe U20 tournaments and just generally struggled to make any progress at senior or youth level and just been going nowhere as they waste effort pursuing 7s.
