@semrush I’d separate it one step further: mention, citation and recommendation are different outcomes. A brand can be visible without being used as evidence, or cited without actually being recommended.
@rustybrick@mikeryanretail The useful comparison here is post-AIO assisted conversion, not CTR alone. Fewer impressions + higher CTR could mean AI Overviews are absorbing the research phase and leaving Shopping ads to users who are further down the funnel.
@OritSiMu@Netanel@suganthan Interesting distinction: citation is an output signal, not proof of retrieval. If Reddit is consulted but not cited, the useful test is whether removing that third-party evidence changes the recommendation or confidence not just the source list
@jackfriks This is the useful next layer: not just whether the pages get cited, but whether that visibility survives across prompt variants and turns into qualified signups. Source → recommendation → conversion is the real chain to measure.
@expo@amanhimself Docs might be the clearest AEO use case. The developer may never click if the agent can retrieve the right version and extract the right answer. Versioning and self-contained answers feel especially important here.
@alexgroberman The big distinction is blocking training vs blocking retrieval. I think a lot of teams will accidentally hurt discoverability while trying to protect their content. Bot policy is becoming part of AI search optimization.
Most AI visibility dashboards start at the end.
They tell you whether ChatGPT mentioned you.
But before that can happen, your page has to be crawled, retrieved, understood and trusted.
Different failure points need different fixes.
That’s the part I care about.
#GEO#AISEO
A mention in ChatGPT is an outcome, not a diagnosis.
Before AI can cite your site, it has to crawl it, retrieve it, understand it and trust what it finds. If you only track mentions, you know that you’re invisible. You still don’t know why.

@ConnorGillivan One distinction worth adding is generation vs retrieval. Once an LLM uses web search or RAG, another layer first decides which sources enter the context. Only then does the token generations process described here start.
@kaleighf The interesting question is whether creators help because of their authority itself, or because they create independent corroboration around a brand. My guess is the second part becomes increasingly important.
@aleyda@TomekRudzki The caching layer may be the most actionable part for site owners. “Can the bot crawl my page?” and “Is the retrieval system actually seeing my latest version?” are two very different diagnostics.
Everyone is optimizing for AI citations.
Almost nobody asks the first question:
Can an AI actually retrieve, understand and verify your page?
If the answer is no, citation tracking is just reporting the symptom.
The useful work starts one layer earlier.
#GEO#AISEO
@aleyda Measurement is the part I keep coming back to. I think we need to separate readiness, observed visibility and business impact. Combining all three into one “AI visibility” metric makes it almost impossible to diagnose what actually needs fixing.
@semrush Interesting, but I would be careful readin causality into that. “Human-written” may just be a proxy for expertise, originality and better editing. Those are the signals that are much harder to automate. Or what do you think about this?
This is exactly why I started building https://t.co/Y3cwdqmT5J. I wanted to diagnose the layers before the citation, not just report whether a brand was mentioned.
AI visibility isn’t one problem.
A page can fail at 4 different layers:
→ crawlability
→ retrieval
→ trust
→ citation-worthiness
Most tools jump straight to “Are you mentioned in ChatGPT?”
That tells you the outcome.
It doesn’t tell you what to fix.
@ahrefs This is the layer most AI visibility dashboards miss. Before measuring mentions or citations, you need to know whether the bots can consistently reach the pages at all. A 403 or 5xx makes every downstream metric irrelevant.
@semrush Semantic HTML helps with interpretation, but I think people overestimate it as a GEO shortcut. Clean structure gets content parsed. Clear claims, evidence and sourceability are what make it worth using.
@semrush Exactly. Query fan-out makes “one keyword = one page” even less useful. The better unit is probably a cluster of questions with a page that gives clear, extractable answers across that intent.
@sengineland This makes “ranking” an increasingly incomplete visibility metric. A page can still rank well while the AI layer absorbs most of the first-screen attention. Citation presence and organic position need to be measured separately.
