BREAKING: @Gemini announced today that it is leaving the UK, just four months after publicly committing to expanding its presence in London.
Gemini announced in October the opening of its first permanent UK office, describing London as a strategic choice as the UK positioned itself as a future global crypto hub.
So what’s changed?
While individual commercial decisions are complex, the broader context is difficult to ignore. The UK continues to signal ambition in crypto and digital assets, but progress on delivering clear, competitive, and timely regulation has been slow.
For firms operating in fast-moving global markets, uncertainty creates friction. When clarity comes more quickly elsewhere, capital, talent, and innovation tend to follow.
This is not just about one firm. It reflects a wider challenge facing the UK’s digital asset ecosystem. Companies willing to engage with regulators and invest in the market need confidence that the policy environment will evolve at the pace of the technology itself.
The UK has the expertise, financial infrastructure, and global reputation to lead in crypto and digital assets. But leadership requires momentum. Without it, the risk is that firms prepared to build here choose to build elsewhere instead.
CryptoUK continues to engage constructively with policymakers to ensure the UK remains an attractive and competitive destination for responsible digital asset innovation. If your organisation wishes to engage in the UK and help drive forward its progress, we invite you to get involved 📷 https://t.co/KtNVMiNyFY
It’s with sadness that we announce to our followers that, through no fault of their own, The Castle in Farnham will not be accepting bitcoin payments as originally planned.
Kudos and thanks to the Directors, including @markrobsonndp Managing Director of New Dawn Pubs and Chair of the British Institute of Inn Keeping, for being innovative and working with @Bridge2Bitcoin to put in place hardware and software to accept bitcoin payments throughout The Castle. However, on hearing their plans to accept bitcoin payments, their bank mentioned potential investigations and the possibility of freezing their account were they to proceed; understandably, this is a risk that the business and Directors were unwilling to take, and so didn’t even get out of the starting blocks with accepting bitcoin.
@Decentrasuz@freddienew even though @bitcoinpolicyuk had a stand at the @UKLabour Party Annual Conference last month, and had many positive engagements with MPs, policy advisors, key figures and @TheFCA , it appears that we still have a long way to go to:
-Stop debanking.
-Ensure on/off ramps work so that banks can't restrict the lawful transfer of funds to and from exchanges by their customers.
-Educate about the economic benefits of Bitcoin for businesses and the UK as a whole.
Given the current state of the UK economy, and specifically the pressures on the hospitality sector, we can not advocate fast enough for pro-Bitcoin policies, and hope that the pro-Bitcoin advocacy and education being carried out in the UK by the likes of @bitcoinpolicyuk@Decentrasuz@freddienew@BitcoinColl@JayW132@Jcastweet@Bitcoinshire@CoinCorner@CoinCornerDanny@JoeNakamoto@BitcoinWomen21@atotheb1980@Princey21M@kaitlynprincey@PeterMcCormack@satmojoe@BSEconf@RussellRukin@Nigel_Farage@DominicFrisby@asjwebley@HenryBTCchef@Musqet_David@BenBrry@BigRpic@nathan_day@bit_fest_UK@Lomondlife@Bridge2Bitcoin etc are heeded sooner rather than later. 🇬🇧 #Bitcoin
