Safe in India Foundation recently had the opportunity to meet Praveen Khandelwal, Hon’ble MP (Chandni Chowk) and Member of the ESI Corporation (Representative of Parliament), to discuss our forthcoming report, “ESI Ki Baat.”
During the meeting, we highlighted the urgent need to strengthen worker safety systems in India, including making BIS power press standards legally enforceable to prevent industrial injuries.
We also sought his support in bringing critical issues related to worker safety and ESIC service delivery into Parliamentary and national policy discussions.
We sincerely thank him for his time, engagement, and continued support towards improving safety and dignity for workers across India.

Do you know?
In just 5 years, India’s auto sector safety rankings have changed sharply.
🚗 Bajaj Auto moved from 8th to 1st
📉 Maruti Suzuki fell from 1st to 9th
⚠️ Ashok Leyland remains at the bottom
These insights come from SafetyNiti2025, Safe in India Foundation’s latest report, which also reviews BRSR disclosures of 78 auto companies—showing better reporting for own factories, but serious gaps in supply chain worker safety.
Worker safety is directly linked to India’s labour productivity (ranked 133rd globally).

Congratulations to @IndiaSpend and @haripaliath Paliath!
Delighted to see IndiaSpend recognised for the fifth consecutive year at the 𝐋𝐚𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲.
A warm congratulations to Shreehari Paliath, whose consistently strong journalism continues to highlight critical gaps in worker safety and women’s labour rights.
One of this year’s award-winning stories features Basanti ji, reported in collaboration with @SafeInIndia01 Foundation, and brings much-needed attention to the inadequate safety systems faced by women workers in India’s automobile component supply chain. These stories matter - they inform public understanding, influence policy conversations, and validate the lived experiences of the workers we support.
Grateful to IndiaSpend and Shreehari for using such an important platform to amplify these realities.

Yet, most of these injuries and employer negligence remain underreported.
Thank you to The Migration Story and journalist Sanskriti Talwar for covering this critical issue with Safe in India and highlighting the stories of workers like Bhoodevi and Somendra, who lost their fingers while working on unsafe power press machines in Gurugram.
👉 Their story is not just about accidents - it is about the systemic neglect of worker safety, the long struggle for ESIC benefits, and the urgent need for brands, suppliers, and government bodies to take workplace safety as seriously as production targets.
At Safe in India, we continue to support injured workers in accessing healthcare and social security while pushing for structural reforms in workplace safety.
Because every finger lost is not just a statistic - it’s a life changed forever.

This Independence Day, let’s remember:
India’s true growth begins where every worker is safe, respected, and empowered.
When our workers are protected and their rights upheld, they can work with dignity, improve productivity, and drive the GDP that powers our nation.

This 15th August, let’s pledge to protect our workers, uphold their rights, and unlock the true potential of India.

Workers in the #automotive industry continue to face safety risk, with a 35 per cent year-on-year increase in injured workers to 1,256 in 2024 as against 926 in 2023, a report released by @SafeInIndia01 showed.

🚨 8,500+ 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝. 79% 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬.
A new report by Safe in India Foundation reveals a grim reality in India’s auto sector: unsafe machines, no safety training, and rising injuries, especially among young, non-permanent workers.
𝐈𝐧 2024 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞 35% 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫. -
This isn’t just a labour issue, it’s an ethical and economic crisis. India loses ₹12.5 lakh crore annually to workplace injuries.
The SII’s report presents clear demands:
1. Corporate boards must be directly accountable for worker safety.
2. Enforcement of a transparent Supplier Code of Conduct.
3. Inclusion of non-permanent workers equally in OSH policies, ESIC coverage and safety rewards.
4. Collaboration with the government to form an industry-wide task force focused on skill development and safety training. Ensure these efforts are backed by independent and credible audits.
5. Professionalization of MSME suppliers: begin with tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers.
A big thank you to The Wire - https://t.co/93aRmD6aEx & @Sayani Chakraborty for covering this critical issue.
We need more courageous journalism like this, because only with strong media support can workers’ voices truly be heard.

How Safe Are Our Workplaces? A Wake-Up Call for India’s Industrial Sector
A recent explainer by Partha Pratim Mitra in @FinancialXpress Express (India) raises urgent and necessary questions around workplace safety, especially in the auto sector. The article highlights troubling trends, such as the alarming rise in finger-crushing injuries, citing Safe in India Foundation’s #Crushed2025 report.
While the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH&WC) Code, 2020 was designed to consolidate and improve worker protections, its delayed implementation continues to leave millions vulnerable, particularly in India's auto component supply chain.
The need for better enforcement and timely implementation of safety norms has never been more critical. Trade unions have valid concerns, but so do the thousands of injured workers waiting for safer work environments.
🔧 Let’s work together, industry, government, civil society to ensure no worker is left behind in India’s journey to economic growth.
🙏 Thank you to the author, Partha Pratim Mitra , and Financial Express (India) for bringing attention to this essential issue.

we have been documenting and raising awareness about such issues through our annual #CRUSHED report now in its 7th edition. The recently launched CRUSHED 2025 exposes continued safety failures in the automotive supply chain, especially in tier-2 &tier-3 factories.
We invite policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens to join Safe in India Foundation’s efforts to make factories safer and ensure injured workers get the justice and care they deserve. Now is the time to act.

Crush injuries in India’s automotive supply sector remains a ‘multibrand problem’; 98% of injured workers assisted by @SafeInIndia1 in Haryana & Maharashtra are from supply chains of Maruti-Suzuki, Honda, Hero, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Bajaj, per new report .

🗓️ Date: 18 July 2025
📍 Venue: India Habitat Centre, New Delhi (Hybrid – Zoom also)
⏰ Time: 11:00 AM – 2 PM IST
WHY THIS MATTERS:
🔹 10,000+ injured workers supported - real people, real stories.
🔹 Over 70% injured on power presses unsafe machines still common in Tier 2/3 auto suppliers.
🔹 Repeated injuries in same factories showing systemic gaps in accountability.
In a year when labour productivity and MSMEs are finally gaining policy focus, CRUSHED 2025 asks tough but urgent questions:
👉 Will India’s Top 10 automobile brands lead the way in making supply chains safer?
👉 Can we scale without leaving the most vulnerable behind?
