I have heard some Christian leaders say that if you are witnessing to a person who doesn't believe the bible, there's one book you can't use in witnessing to them, and that's the bible! But that's absolutely the wrong way to witness to this person.

Over the years, one of the most asked questions I've received goes like this, "what's the best evidence to use with someone who doesn't believe the bible, because you can't use the bible with them? How then should we argue with them?"

But if you give up the bible, you give up the foundation for your worldview and you've already lost before you begin! When you visit the @CreationMuseum, you will find that the first major exhibits teach people there are ultimately two starting points for one's worldview. You either start with God's Word or man's word. If you give up God's Word as your starting point, then you still have a starting point but it's man's word! You've lost the argument before you begin.

Practical example: A young man came up to me at a conference and said, "I'm gay and believe in gay marriage, what is your response to that?" My response, "Well I'm a Christian, and I start with God's Word to build my thinking. So can I explain to you why i believe what I do based on the bible, as that's where my worldview, my morality etc., come from?" His response, "Don't give me the bible, I don't believe the bible. Give me something else, but not the bible."

Now if i gave up the bible, then I don't have a foundation for my worldview that marriage was created by God and is for one man and one woman. So I can't give up the bible. I said, "you don't believe the bible?" He said, "no." I replied, "but I do and I'm not apologizing for that. That's where my worldview comes from." So then, knowing what he was most likely taught in school (evolutionary ideas), college, the media etc., I asked a series of questions. "Why don't you believe the bible? What makes you think it's not true? Where do you get your morality from? Does everyone have to have the same morality as you? If not, why not. If so, why?" I asked further questions about where he believes life came from and how did humans come to exist and so on.

The point is I challenge his foundation and do my best to explain he has beliefs that determine his morality. I also explain if he doesn't have the same foundation as me (the bible) then I totally get it as to why he doesn't have the same morality as me. I go on to give some examples of how science confirms (not proves in an ultimate sense of course as you can't) the history in Genesis. I show him why I believe his foundation is wrong.

Thus I use apologetics arguments and of course it depends on where the conversation leads as to what questions I ask, and answers I give. But then I ensure I explain the bible's history concerning gender and marriage and why I have the worldview I do. I use that to explain the origin of sin, death and our need of a Savior and of course go on to explain the rest of the gospel. No point in arguing if I'm not proclaiming God's Word as truth and the saving gospel.

Remember, it's not man's word that convicts!

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17); "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12); "so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it" (Isaiah 55:11).

The point is it's not ultimately a battle about evidence (though discussing evidence is important), it's a spiritual battle which is why you always need to use the armor of God.

"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11).

You may be on a mission that causes conflict, or even causes people to hate you, like Jesus. Yet, do it with godly character ...like Jesus.
