⚠️BREAKING⚠️ The EU Member States fail today to secure a majority in the Council of Ministers to support the Nature Restoration Law
Despite the widespread support and the fact that the deal had been already approved in the European Parliament, the NRL has been stalled by last-minute political manoeuvres of Member States, putting our environment at risk. This setback contradicts the EU's commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and environmental sustainability.
We condemn the actions of Member States who are not supporting this crucial legislation: Hungary, that unexpectedly changed its position last minute and the other abstaining or opposing countries (NL, SE, PL, IT, BE, FI, AU) that didn’t challenge their stance. This was a clearly politically motivated move that has now put not only the NRL but the whole EU decision-making process in jeopardy.
It is vital that the NRL is adopted before the summer break to ensure the protection of our natural world and the rights of citizens. We call on @EU2024BE and on @vonderleyen to take decisive action to salvage this key pillar of the European Green Deal.
The credibility of the EU is on the line in this critical year of EU elections. Failure to enact the NRL not only undermines environmental protection but also impacts decision-making on climate targets and disaster preparedness. We need to work together to ensure the EU remains a global leader in environmental conservation and fulfils its commitments under the Global Biodiversity Framework.

🎉The Environment Committee of the European Parliament just voted in favour of the law to #RestoreNature, approving the final text with 53 to 28 votes.
The proposal is now only one step away from the European Parliament’s side of the co-decision process to become reality: adoption in plenary.

Our Lithuanian Partner is making the largest river in Lithuania, the Nemunas, a suitable home for Little and Common Terns again! 😊
With The Lithuanian Ornithological Society’s guidance and expertise, the Lithuanian Inland Waterways Authority created 23 new sandy and gravel islands and beaches in four protected areas along the river. The existing islands were also bolstered up to make sure they are suitable for nesting.
Thanks to this excellent collaboration, a significant increase in the number of nesting sites of the Little and Common Terns in the project area has been observed.
🤗By working together, we can make our rivers thrive again. #RestoreNature

⚠️Members and volunteers of the Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia (BPSSS @BirdLifeSerbia) are currently receiving a massive amount of hate and death threats on social media after reporting the illegal killing of migratory birds!
Up to 800 illegal calling devices for quails are placed every weekend in Serbia. The use of devices for mass destruction of wild birds is prohibited by the Serbian criminal code. Due to this form of illegal hunt, every year at least 50,000 quails are killed, inflicting massive damages to our biodiversity.
On the 9th and 10th of September 2023, members and volunteers of the BPSSS discovered electronical devices and found 3 armed Italian citizens carrying 8 freshly shot quails and no hunting or weapon permit. The discovery was immediately reported to the police.
The president of a local hunting society published on Facebook on the 12th of September a video in which he spread dangerous misinformation around the episode, spurring rage from the Serbian hunters and encouraging them to take their anger out on the activists. This resulted in more than 60 hate posts, including explicit death threats, against BPSSS' members.
🚨We strongly condemn the hate campaign and death threats, as well as the defence of illegality and ecological destruction.
We call on @SerbianGov authorities to act swiftly and decisively to protect our activists and preserve the #RuleofLaw
We urge @FACEforHunters to clearly reject such behaviour and act within the Serbian hunting community to restore peace, legality and dignity.
