History can be brutal, so I decided to quickly fact-check his claims. To be honest, he was largely accurate.

You can also verify the claims yourself, without allowing emotions to get in the way.

1. Ikwerreland formed part of the commercial corridor connecting the southeastern hinterland to Kalabari, Okrika and other coastal trading houses. The captives were mainly drawn from various Igbo and Ibibio communities through warfare, kidnapping, judicial punishment, debt and sales by relatives or local authorities.

2. When the Atlantic slave trade declined, slavery did not disappear immediately. Some captives retained in Ikwerreland became farmhands or domestic servants. Some women were made wives, while children could be adopted into their purchasers’ families. Although some were gradually absorbed into their new communities, they did not always receive equal status. They and their descendants could still be regarded as strangers or people of slave ancestry.

However, the evidence mainly establishes Ikwerreland as a trade route, market and collection area. It does not suggest that the Ikwerre were the principal suppliers of every captive.
