While extreme rains, #floods and #landslides continue to dominate the news, across the Hindu Kush Himalaya, a quieter water crisis has been unfolding as springs, main water-source for millions, have dried up.
The losses caused by the disappearance of springs, while less sudden and visible than sudden-onset disasters, are no less consequential, as this film from Uttarkhand shows.
Without water, crops fail. Livestock die. Life, both for people and the more-than-human world, becomes impossible; and from India and Nepal to Bhutan and Bangladesh, villages have hollowed out as springs have run dry.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Across the region, ICIMOD, communities and local government have been coming together to bring springs back to life, deploying nature-based solutions and transforming the ways water is managed.
This world water week, we are calling for more local government decision-makers and communities to join with us to #BringSpringsBack

ICIMOD’s latest report, Water, Ice, Society, and Ecosystems in the #HinduKushHimalaya, is published today.
Building on the 2019 Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) assessment report, this major new study provides the most accurate assessment of #snow, ice, and #permafrost to date.
The peer-reviewed study warns of grave consequences to the region, which provides #freshwater services to a quarter of the world's population and is home to four global #biodiversity hotspots.
Key findings:
🔹Himalayan #glaciers disappeared 65% faster in the 2010s than in previous decade
🔹The glaciers could lose up to 80% of their current volume by end of this century
🔹Availability of #water in the Hindu Kush Himalaya is expected to peak in mid-century then decline
🔹#Floods and #landslides are projected to increase over the coming decades
🔹Effects of the changing #cryosphere on fragile #mountain habitats are particularly acute

All of us at ICIMOD offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved who lost loved ones in the @FlyYeti crash incident. We lost a colleague & a friend, Yuvraj Sharma. Sending our prayers & love to Yuvraj’s wife & family. May they have the strength & love to bear this terrible loss.
As glaciers melt, the consequences are global. However, the impacts are heightened for communities who’ve contributed the least to this problem. @dbyeti asks an important question: https://t.co/dsGPyuuAlZ #CryosphereWednesday#HKHRiverBasins@WorldBankSAsia@The_Third_Pole
