It is so important to be able to look ahead and prevent what we can. Drug coverage is definitely a step in the right direction to protect our patients long term. #PHARM4420
Determining some treatments as medically unnecessary fails to consider the tremendously increased risk the “unnecessary” conditions can cause for much more serious ones. If drug coverage were offered for these conditions, we would save healthcare money long term. #Pharm4420
Non-adherence to medications is already a problem for a vast majority of the patients we see. With affordability being factored in, it becomes worrisome what could happen to the health of our patients without universal coverage of medications. #PHARM4420
In Canada, the government healthcare plan covers prescription drugs in hospitals. However, when getting prescriptions from a pharmacy there is NOT universal coverage. Why does our Country cover medications in an acute setting but not in a preventative setting? #Pharm4420
A big issue with funding of healthcare in Canada is that we have yet to find the balance to cover the care that people so desperately need . Healthcare should be a priority and a right, not a privilege. #PHARM4420
It would be interesting to see how much the government could save if they paid for preventative medications such as , antihypertensives, contraception. This would reduce the burden on our healthcare system in the long run by preventing need for further treatment later #PHARM4420
We often hear the phrase "healthcare is free in Canada" but unfortunately, it is still not completely accessible to all. We see this when patients are left to choose between their medications at the pharmacy. Patients should not have to ration their money in this way. #PHARM4420
@jcapritchett It is crucial to maximize the healthcare resources that we do have, such as pharmacists! Pharmacists can free up many of the appointments that patients would see their doctor for if the scope of practice continues to expand! #PHARM4420
Pharmacist led clinics are transforming the meaning of accessible health care. Pharmacists in NS can provide assessments and medications to patients without a doctor. The best part? Clinics are free with NS health card! I hope to see these clinics open in NL soon #PHARM4420
@MelanieJanelle5 Oral contraceptives are such common medications and are often a common reason for patients to see their GPs so I totally agree that having pharmacists be able to manage OCP for patients would be a great addition to the scope here in NL. #PHARM4420
@Michael_Lahey10 Good point, Michael! I hope to see the scope of practice for pharmacists in NL expand over the next little while to reflect the scope of other provinces such as Alberta so our patients get the most out of pharmacist-led clinics here as well. #PHARM4420
it's great to hear that there was reduction in hospitalized patients because pharmacists were able to prescribe for Paxlovid. This proves the ability of pharmacists to prescribe for minor ailments. I hope to see some pharmacist-led clinics in NL in the near future. #Pharm4420
Over 130,000 patients do not have access to a general practitioner across NL. A collaborative team approach can alleviate the pressures on the Canadian healthcare system. One way we can do this is through pharmacist led clinics! #Pharm4420

"UTIs are the 8th most common cause for ambulatory care visits". Many provinces in Canada have expanded the scope of prescribing by pharmacists to include UTIs, including NS and ON. I hope to see UTIs on the minor ailments list in NL soon! #PHARM4420
PAXLOVID prescribing by pharmacists has had a positive effect on Covid-related hospitalization. Assessments by pharmacists allow for timely care that prevents death and complications.

With STIs on a rise, testing is a crucial part of keeping everyone safe. Pharmacies in NL are now offering free STI screening for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis. #PHARM4420

Pharmacist-led clinics are becoming increasingly common across all of Canada allowing for better accessibility to services such as medication reviews, disease management, and minor ailments prescribing therefore, decreasing the burden on our healthcare system. #PHARM4420
