I don’t think people understand how revolutionary @DiscoLoopAI could be. Instead of worrying about Gemini or Google (which will ultimately be fine—they always have been), I’m more excited by the possibility that we’re finally seeing someone push beyond the plateau in AGI and incremental LLM development. If successful, it could restore faith that AI’s greatest impact will be helping humanity, not harming it.

So Google just announced some major changes in DeepMind’s leadership.

Demis Hassabis will become Chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet’s Chief Scientist, leaving daily management while continuing to advise its models and research.

Basically it gives Hassabis more time for AGI strategy, scientific discovery, global policy work, and Isomorphic Labs, while Kavukcuoglu carries the pressure of shipping Gemini.

The timing also reflects scale: Gemini now serves 950M monthly users. So model research, releases, and app execution needs a much larger operating job.

The announcement also confirms that Gemini 4 is in development, though Google provided no release date or technical details.

Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are separately leaving to form a public-benefit research company, with Alphabet remaining an investor and Cloud partner.

Google is building two leadership tracks, one deciding where advanced AI should go and another turning that research into products used at Google scale.

I love SF but hated Stanford. deeply incurious, entitled, conformist place

1) Nobody leaves campus. Caltrained to SF once every 1-2 mos, which was unusual + hard to get ppl to join. Kids are totally disconnected from / uninterested in the real world.

2) Stanford ships incoming freshmen 3 books over the summer and organizes a panel of the authors your first week on campus. Still remember turning to my dormmate to ask what they thought. Reply: “You actually read the books?”

3) Reflexive disrespect for humanities. Was told regularly “Why would you study IR?” and “Everyone smart enough to study CS does.” My freshman dorm was 75% eng. Eng is cool but so is interdisciplinarity.

4) Meanwhile humanities grade-inflate like crazy to retain anyone at all. Profs gave me 0 critical comments on my essays until I did an Oxford tutorial abroad and realized how little I knew. Nobody does readings or psets, ppl believe the focus is networking not learning.

5) There’s just a sense of I’m special so don’t have to try. New grads are too good to have non-prestigious job titles. Founding is all status no substance — kid raises $1m for a startup he knows is fake and starts waving around a Brex to buy ppl shots.
