Suspension: the magic behind composability (or "The Kyo Monad")

Kyo is a new effect system in Scala with an innovative approach to generalize monadic computations to express composable algebraic effects. This talk will cover the internals of the library to address common questions: How does it provide effect composability? How can we reason about effect ordering? What’s behind its next-level performance? We’ll explore Kyo’s core suspension mechanism, see how it allows for unparalleled composability, and how it compares to similar solutions like ZIO and Caprese.

Cool, right? I thought I was finally comfortable to share my work and interact more with the Scala community but I found out that the Scala Center is barring me from speaking at conferences where they’re involved.

You might think that’s the result of a principled and clear process given how sensitive it is to exclude someone from a community but no no. The justification they’re going with is that I’m likely “clinically insane”! Yes, you read that right. Yet another clear CoC violation by the people who are responsible for enforcing it.

I won’t be giving talks while this issue isn’t addressed. If you want to see more content on #Kyo, please reach out to your closest Scala Center member or one of the new Scala Ambassadors. I urge everyone to please keep a respectful tone 🙏

Mike Mentzer scolds Arnold at the 1980 Olympia.

Arnold was the classic dumb brute. he represented the popular media, conventional wisdom. he now completely embodies those traits as a puppet for elite agendas.

Mentzer was into philosophy, extraordinarily well spoken, probably the smartest pro bodybuilder ever. He was never about flash, but substance. his system was pioneering and helped guide one of the greatest ever to the mountain top and back down safely (Dorian Yates). He consistently went against the grain in his thinking. He recognized that most of what we're told was crap.

Arnold tried to intimidate Mentzer. he was aggressive and hostile in the pre-competition to multiple athletes, none of who stood up to Arnold in fear.

Not Mike though.

He got in Mentzer's face expecting the same reaction. Mike clapped back and told Arnold he was acting like a child, that he had become a joke. That he should be ashamed of himself.

Mike always resented Arnold for his lack of critical thinking and bastardization of exercise physiology (Though he respected him for popularizing the sport).

Arnold cowered in fear, retreated to his seat, and pretended like he didn't just start a huge scene. He gave in.

The judges gave the victory to Arnold, but it was unanimously agreed by the fans and other competitors that the Olympia was fixed to promote Arnold's movies. Mentzer stopped competing afterwards in disgust.

But in the real world, man to man, with no smokescreens, truth, honesty and integrity prevailed.
