One of the things we don’t talk about enough…..Xylaria necrophora, the causal organism of taproot decline, can also be a seedling disease-causing organism @MSSOY #mscrops

Rhizoctonia infection in cotton can cause seed rot and damping-off with sunken lesions on the hypocotyl (often referred to as sore shin).

Rhizoctonia is commonly found in cotton soils and can occur with other seedling pathogens, forming the “cotton seedling disease complex.”

Management for Rhizoctonia include planting high-quality seed in well-drained soils and using seed treatment fungicides. Certain fungicide products applied in the seed furrow at planting can reduce disease caused by Rhizoctonia.

One of the things I value most about @AR_Extension is the role county agents play. County demonstrations happen because agents know their growers, fields, and local challenges.

This year I will have a few soil fertility demos too 🌾🌱

Last Friday was spent collecting N-STaR samples with Chris in Craighead County and delivering fertilizer for a P and K demo with @faulkneruada in Faulkner County.

Busy week planting cotton and soybean trials at Rohwer Research Station. The station staff did a great job dodging the wind and getting fields sprayed behind us. Also breaking in a new infurrow / 2x2 system designed by @DavisSprayGuy (that's why I'm standing on the planter).

Taproot decline of soybean has a common denominator. Dig around long enough and you’ll likely find blackened residue from the previous season that harbors the fungus. Roots of developing soybean plants come into contact with the residue and you get taproot decline #mscrops @MSSOY

Rated a fungicide trial on wheat this afternoon in Carlisle with Lonoke County Ag agent Trapper Padgett. Drone compared to ground application. There was a fair amount of leaf rust in this trial.

#Wheat plots at Marianna are really growing with warm temps this week. Dry weather has wheat looking excellent. I found very low levels of stripe rust - no treatment is needed currently, but will watch how it may progress.
