So excited to announce the launch of Eric's new company with support and funding from Y Combinator. (!!!) If you remember Eric, he was the star of I Didn't Believe Him, the true story of how a kindergartner refused to allow his school to fail to teach him to read. The book ends with words he uttered when he was 7-year-old. "I always succeed." Those words are true because he puts a lot of hard work, determination and kindness into everything he does. So proud.

Thank you for your prompt reply! Can I get a link to that report? I wrote a book about how damaging Units of Study is to children (called "I DIdn't Believe Him") so I am in fully your camp. Seeing that fact in your video horrified me and I looked into it but could find only reports saying NY is on the right track curriculum wise. As a developmental psychologist who teaches kids to read in NYC I can tell you what is going wrong with THOSE curriculums, but that is DM territory. Is what I found in this link not happening:

Do you know why reading scores in New York City “shot up” this year? Here is what I witnessed happen in the third-grade classroom I volunteered in. I am sure it happened in other classrooms in that school as well: ALL parents of ALL struggling readers were told to have their children opt out of the test. They NEVER TOOK IT and so their struggles were undocumented in the city’s results. Had the struggling readers taken the test, the school’s test results would have been MUCH worse. So excited to see I Didn't Believe Him on the top right of Kim's stack of books she has learned from! Like seeing a piece of my heart and soul and lived experience in Kim's house! have been so busy working with kids who THINK they can't read that I haven't had a chance to share info from the book recently, yet it is a runaway success thanks to all of you who are sharing it through word of mouth. I so appreciate you spreading the word and am looking forward to sharing more on socials soon. Do want to share what's happening with reading in Manhattan though. I had thought my business would decrease now that schools in New York are teaching phonics, but it has boomed. Kids know their phonics rules but they THINK they can’t read because the schools are still sending home pattern books instead of decodables for them to read. Parents used to bring kids to me because their kids couldn’t read, now they bring them because they hate reading and won't do it. But of course that’s because they can’t read what their schools are giving them to read. Much work to be done in the fall!

@BoksnerJudy Yes! 💯This was a point made by the National Reading Panel in the year 2000! Using letters when teaching phonemic awareness had almost DOUBLE the effect size. Letters should definitely be used! Here is an excellent post about it: https://t.co/sKBOthzNOh.💯💯

Kim! I was so excited to see my book on the top right of your stacks of books. You made my day! I too enjoy reading nonfiction and learning. Hope you’re having a great summer and recharging. I’ve been going full steam ahead until this week, and it feels really good to have some time off.
