Tangled Echoes of Ugandan Medical Heroes and stars.

There are stories that haunt a nation, and others that haunt the very halls we grew up in - whispered through corridors of Mulago, carried in the grief of colleagues, families, and old boys who remember.

The passing of Dr. Fred Norman Bagenda has reopened an old wound - one layered with tragedy, service, and the cruel irony of history repeating itself. Just today Dr. John Spire Kiggundu was laid to rest, and we now mourn Fred - a gifted doctor, a strong defender on the pitch, and a proud @SmackObs and @budonian . His loss reminds some of us of darker times - the murder of his father, Dr. Mitchell Bagenda, in 1979, alongside Dr. Stephen Obace, Dr. Joseph Kamulegeya, and Dr. Jack Barlow. That campaign of assassinations during Binaisa’s brief presidency was not just about doctors - it was a message of fear, a tearing apart of Uganda’s professional soul.

Fred, like his father, chose the path of service. And like his late brother, Elliot Bagenda - the high-flying Badu of Sadoline Power and Lumumba Hall - he brought joy and strength to those around him, in sports, in laughter, in commitment. That both brothers now rest, gone too soon, is a heartbreak words can barely hold.

These are not just names - they are webs of friendship, memory, purpose. And yet, how fragile it all is. The Bagenda family has given Uganda athletes, healers, patriots - and in return, we have given them grief. But we remember. We honour. And we speak their names, not in fear, but in gratitude.

May their legacies remain louder than their loss. #Uganda
