Early voting starts *today* here in Ohio & I’m speaking tonight about a critical issue at the bottom of the ballot: Issue 1 seeks to replace Ohio’s current system (which was adopted by the people with 70%+ of the vote) with a new unelected & unaccountable group. This is the blueprint that the left plans to use nationally to redraw lines that favor Democrats. If they succeed in red Ohio, they’ll employ this tactic across the country. 

The people we elect to run the government should be the ones who actually run the government, not unelected officials. But Issue 1 would move Ohio in the wrong direction by preventing our accountable *elected* leaders from drawing the maps for congressional & General Assembly districts. Instead, a group of 15 commissioners - with applicants narrowed down “at random” - would create new districts after each census. These commissioners would effectively become bureaucrats entitled to taxpayer-funded salaries and empowered to control the future of our elections—a complete subversion of the American system of government.

I’ve been a CEO. I know that if you can’t fire someone, they don’t work for you. But these new commissioners - who weren’t elected in the first place - would be practically unfireable. Under Issue 1, a commissioner couldn’t be removed by voters, or even elected officials, but only by fellow commissioners. Even if that commissioner, say, committed a felony. That is nuts. Voters should be able to remove them.

Even worse, in a likely violation of the First Amendment, Issue 1 would also prohibit individuals from contacting commissioners outside of official meetings and a public comment portal. Issue 1’s bureaucrats are, like most nameless and faceless functionaries, to be “protected” from the very people they are supposed to serve.

The reason elections matter is because we the people get to decide who governs us: elections are the foundation of public accountability. Ohio knows better than to cede this power from our current elected members of the Redistricting Commission to a bunch of bureaucrats. That is why I urge my fellow Ohioans to vote NO on Issue 1.
