Fires near Bordeaux are being framed as a pure “climate change story,” but the real driver is three centuries of land-use choices that drained coastal peat bogs to create a 2 million-acre block of tightly packed maritime pine. These trees are some of the most resinous trees in the world - they were planted to create a turpentine industry.

Climate change widens the window for bad fire days, but once a spark hits this industrial fuel bed, the intensity and spread we’re seeing are mostly about fuels and design. If we want different outcomes, we have to talk about plantations, peat, and perverse incentives in the forest carbon markets that encourage the establishment of man-made forests that are the opposite of climate-resilient.
