Con @AndresTobelem, seguimos explorando cómo entender fenómenos sociales a través de grafos.

🕸️ En esta clase mostré cómo usar @Gephi para visualizar redes — con un ejemplo divertido: el grafo de relaciones entre los personajes de Game of Thrones 🐉

También presenté varias métricas de centralidad, fundamentales para analizar la estructura de las redes:
🔹 Grado de los nodos
🔹 Betweenness centrality
🔹 PageRank, inventado por Larry Page y Sergey Brin cuando eran estudiantes en @Stanford
🔹 k-core y k-shell
🔹 Collective Influence, desarrollado por Hernan Makse @kcore_analytics y Flaviano Morone (@CityCollegeNY)

📈 Además, contamos cómo aplicamos k-shell y Collective Influence para caracterizar la posición de los usuarios dentro del grafo de comunicaciones telefónicas — y cómo esa posición, junto con la edad, nos brinda información valiosa sobre su nivel socioeconómico.

At #MediaParty2025, Gitesh Gohel, Chief Product Officer at @TheAtlantic, shared a thought-provoking talk on how publishers can rebuild meaningful community within their own platforms — rather than relying on social media intermediaries.

🌀 The Big Shift
Search and social media used to be the front doors of digital journalism. But the landscape has changed — audiences are fragmented, attention is scarce, and trust is fragile.
The question is no longer how to reach people, but how to build spaces that reflect shared values.

💬 Comments Are Broken
Online conversations were designed for engagement, not for impact.
Publishers have inherited toxicity, poor UX, and a loss of control over how they interact with their audiences.
They now have both the role — and the responsibility — to reimagine participation, moderation, and dialogue.

🧭 The challenge ahead is not just technical but cultural: how to design digital environments where journalism can once again foster trust, empathy, and community.

🎙️ “Data for Inclusion: Network Science and Finance in the Digital Era”

I had the pleasure of giving an invited talk at the Interdisciplinary Workshop on Econometrics and Complex Networks in Economics, organized by @Netlab_IIEP at @IIEP_oficial (@UBAonline - @CONICETDialoga).

The workshop took place at @UBAEconomicas, bringing together researchers from economics, data science, and network science to discuss how complex-systems approaches can shed light on economic phenomena.

In my presentation, I shared collaborative work on how large-scale communication and social-network data can help us understand —and ultimately improve— access to financial services. By combining tools from network science, econometrics, and data science, we can uncover patterns of inequality, identify opportunities for inclusion, and design more inclusive credit-scoring models for populations that are often left out of the formal financial system.

🔍 Isaac Newton pasó más tiempo buscando la piedra filosofal que pensando en la manzana.

Cuando pensamos en #Newton, imaginamos al científico que formuló las leyes de la gravitación y la mecánica clásica. Pero su vida tuvo lados menos conocidos.

Newton dedicó décadas a la alquimia ⚗️, convencido de que era una vía legítima para entender la naturaleza. Llenó miles de páginas con experimentos y fórmulas en busca de la piedra filosofal, esa sustancia mítica capaz de transformar metales en oro 🪙 y otorgar la vida eterna. Durante siglos, estos escritos fueron ocultos o minimizados para no manchar su reputación científica.

En sus reflexiones privadas, Newton sostenía que el orden del sistema solar no podía deberse solo a fuerzas mecánicas: debía ser mantenido por la voluntad de un Ser inteligente. En 1692 escribió:

“Este bellísimo sistema del Sol, los planetas y los cometas solo pudo proceder del consejo y dominio de un Ser inteligente.”

Cuando publicó sus #PrincipiaMathematica en 1687, dejó fuera toda mención a causas teológicas y presentó únicamente leyes matemáticas precisas. Así separó sus convicciones religiosas de la ciencia publicada, estableciendo un estándar que marcaría el rumbo de la física moderna.

Newton tampoco sentía que hubiera llegado al final del camino. Lo expresó con humildad en una de sus frases más recordadas:

“No sé qué pueda parecerle al mundo, pero a mí me parece que no fui más que un niño jugando en la orilla del mar, mientras el gran océano de la verdad permanecía completamente desconocido ante mí.”

📱 Mobile phone data have become a valuable source for studying human mobility. However, they often provide sparse and irregular location samples due to the nature of mobile communications — leaving significant gaps in users' movement trajectories.

✨ In this work, we introduce Context-enhanced Trajectory Reconstruction, a novel approach based on tensor factorization to infer missing information and accurately complete individual trajectories derived from CDR data.

Es difícil exagerar la influencia que Alan Kay tiene en la forma en que pensamos hoy en día las computadoras y la programación.

Trabajó en el mítico Xerox PARC en los años '70. Fue uno de los creadores de #Smalltalk, el primer lenguaje puramente orientado a objetos. Ya tenía la idea de las notebooks personales (él lo llamaba #Dynabook, "A Personal Computer for children of all ages") y las interfaces gráficas de usuario (GUI) en los años '70!

Yo programé en Smalltalk cosas de matemáticas, criptografía y criptoanálisis junto con @AFutoransky y Gera Richarte en el (para mí) mítico #CoreLabs, el laboratorio de investigación de Core Security Technologies. Una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras e irrepetibles de mi vida.

It is commonly believed that patterns of social ties affect individuals’ economic status. We translate this concept into an operational definition at the network level, which allows us to infer the economic well-being of individuals through a measure of their location and influence in the social network.

Our results show that an individual’s location, measured as the optimal #CollectiveInfluence to the structural integrity of the #SocialNetwork, is highly correlated with personal #EconomicStatus.

The observed social network patterns of influence mimic the patterns of economic inequality.
