@bedoctored @Prof_Marciniak @RandyJRead Agreed, the devil is in the details! These predictions will help to answer some scientific questions but certainly not most. I think the greatest value of this approach will be to enable more targeted investigations more quickly where previously a structural context was lacking.
@Prof_Marciniak @bedoctored @RandyJRead Having said that, the first model I downloaded from alphafold was of a protein a PhD student asked me about a few months ago, in which the core structure is already in the PDB, but there is no information about the N-terminus. For this protein at least, we're not there yet!
@Prof_Marciniak @bedoctored @RandyJRead Now there's baiting if ever I saw it! 😉
Without doubt it is a huge advance for computational biology and making the code and database of predictions available to the community is bound to make a substantial impact.
One of the key findings of the paper is that the structure of alpha-1-antitrypsin bound to a small molecule inhibitor of polymerisation is representative of a polymerisation intermediate state sampled by the pathogenic Z variant.
Congratulations to first authors @AlistairJagger and @chris_waudby for their stellar work on the natural abundance NMR of alpha-1-antitrypsin as revealed in our @NatureComms paper today! https://t.co/JsBMmaIZW3
The #coronavirus pandemic underlines the importance of #OpenScience, research & international cooperation. In these challenging times, reliable information and science need to be accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Here's how we make it happen: https://t.co/j4Y2EEJ4vE
Thrilled that our paper has come to fruition after a lot of hard work! Special thanks to tissue donors. Thanks also to Electron Microscopy + Crystallography @ismb_london, HBRC @unibirmingham, P12 #SAXS@embl@desy Hamburg & ID30B @esrfsynchrotron beamlines &HPC clusters @uclrits
Our paper is out - to address the question of the structure of alpha-1-antitrypsin polymers in a person who carries two copies of the Z allele, we went to the source: the liver itself. #antitrypsin#A1ATD@UCLRespiratory@ismb_london@AlphaFriend https://t.co/SxBQdoAyBq
A new paper on the parasites from the Must Farm settlement discusses the diet and health of the people living at the site. If you are squeamish, you may want to look away...
