It’s time for another anecdote from Pakistan: When Munir was DG ISI in 2019, the then army chief Gen. Bajwa sacked him before he could complete his tenure because Munir, during Prime Minister Imran Khan's visit to Tehran, and discussions with IRGC and Iranian officials, used undiplomatic and threatening language over Iran's role in the insurgency in Balochistan. The Iranian leadership at the highest level complained to Pakistan that Munir was not mentally stable. He was sacked. Interestingly, when the army chief sent a list of probable successors to prime minister's office, he omitted Munir's name, citing his mental health.

Munir is a thug though (as you would have seen in his relationship with Trump). He conspired with former Prime Minister and fugitive absconder in London, Nawaz Sharif, and struck a deal with him. Nawaz Sharif's brother, Shahbaz Sharif, who was prime minister after Prime Minister Khan was toppled by the Biden administration in an ordered regime change in Pakistan, picked Munir as army chief, technically days after he was supposed to retire from his service as a Lt. Gen.

Munir then stole Khan's election in February 2024 and changed the constitution using PMLN / Shahbaz Sharif's party, which had won only 17 seats, and gave himself a 10-year extension with clauses to make it lifetime.

Then Munir gave everything to Trump, from catering to his crypto family business, to selling Pakistan's critical minerals to him, to nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize, to signing up to send Pakistani troops as mercenaries to Gaza, to the ongoing negotiation role on Iran.

Munir did it all to get legitimacy from the U.S.

It is a shame that scholars like you have not paid more attention to Pakistan and how the country has changed in the last four years, and that you are discovering it only now due to the war in Iran.
