Alberta is on fire.
But hey, we have a budget surplus.
Albertans are dying without cancer treatment.
But hey, we have a budget surplus.
Classroom are crowded, and teachers are exhausted.
But hey, we have a budget surplus.
This is winning in #Alberta.

The revelations about multiple ministers, staff members, and the Premier herself attending playoff hockey games on lobbyists’ dimes should come as no surprise to Albertans given the level of cronyism shown by this government.
Last year, the Premier complained publicly that she wasn’t allowed to go to hockey games with lobbyists and proceeded to change the rules so that she could. So, it’s no surprise that her staff went to a game paid for by the company she awarded the nearly $100 million failed Turkish Tylenol scheme.
The whole point of the original ethics rules was to make sure that any gifts were reasonable and modest and that they were publicly disclosed as well as to ensure that no one can buy hours of uninterrupted access to politicians and staff. The changes the Premier made to those rules disregard all these principles, leaving the impression that government can be bought by anyone.
Having ministers and staff sit in lobbyists’ luxury boxes while we are facing an affordability crisis in this province not only looks bad, it shows they’re living in a different world than the average Albertan.
At the very least, the Premier must now:
➡️disclose all staff and politicians who have accepted tickets and from whom, as well as who paid for all travel.
➡️commit to an all-party process to strengthen ethics rules and disclosures, including removing the carte blanche for the Premier’s Chief of Staff to approve any gift of any amount.
➡️finally give us a full accounting of the Turkish Tylenol fiasco, including which lobbyists met with which politicians and staff.
Since 1971, Alberta governments have invoked closure (time allocation) on 60 bills.
25 of those have been under the UCP in the past 5 years.

.@City_of_Airdrie Odd that Airdrie voters are disappointed with UCP’s budget that doesn’t address their basic needs.
Consistently, since 1993, Airdrie elected the most conservative MLAs, fanatical about budget cuts, particularly to social programs.
Reality is sinking in.

@TheMcKenziest @JoshuaPHilll Conservatives point to empty grocery stores as the failure of communism or whatever. I point to the full grocery stores, in a society where many starve, as a sign of the failure of capitalism.

How to wage war on the poor:
STEP 1: Make it illegal to be homeless
STEP 2: Make it illegal to give food and temporary shelter to the homeless
This is happening in #Barrie Ontario this week. Not the Canada I want to live in.

@rhyscourtman@CalgaryOccupy It's true - we've been quiet on twitter lately but the Facebook groups are certainly buzzing. Would be nice to ramp up even more while folks are engaged!
A couple tents popped up behind my house recently. Cooking up some burgers for them and making sure their needs are met. If you see an encampment pop up in your neighborhood those folks are your neighbours now. Look out for them.
So I’ve never done this before. I take being purple very seriously (despite what Twitter trolls say). But this election is so important. This is about our future. So I’m sharing (in many many words) why I am proud to support @RachelNotley in this election. https://t.co/sTiKNteda0
Danielle Smith should know that there is NO WAY for a hospital to move into FOR-PROFIT ownership, without the PROFIT coming at the expense of either workers' wages OR quality of patient care, right?
This is loony toons. The UCP cannot be taken seriously.
