End of free press in Pakistan, it’s utter disgrace to see to #GeoNews becoming propaganda machine for the oppressor state, does the channel now has the courage or professional honesty to report that the bogus and fabricated terrorism case was dismissed by the court in #Karachi, which ordered their release. Yet, despite the release order, both young Sindhi activists were abducted again right in front of lawyers and families. What kind of journalism is this—where the so-called accused/suspects and their families have no voice in stories about their arrests, torture, and suffering?

پھلی ویڈیو اُس وقت کی ہے جب غنی امان کو کراچی کے میمونہ اسپتال سے اٹھایا گیا، جہاں وہ اپنی بیٹی کے علاج کے لیے موجود تھا اُسی رات سرمد میرانی کو بھی اٹھایا گیا، جس کے بعد پورے سندھ میں احتجاج ہوا اس احتجاج کے ردِعمل میں سی ٹی ڈی نے ایک جھوٹی پریس ریلیز جاری کی، پریس ریلیز میں یہ دعویٰ کیا گیا کہ ان کے پاس ہینڈ گرنیڈ اور بارودی مواد موجود تھا
یہ انتہائی شرمناک بات ہے کہ نام نہاد "جیو" نے بھی اسی جھوٹی پریس ریلیز کی بنیاد پر خبر نشر کی اور انہیں دہشت گرد قرار دیا آخر صحافتی اخلاقیات کہاں گئیں؟

Geo has responded that they covered the filing of a missing person petition for recovery of Ghani Aman in the 9pm bulletin on 30th Oct (clip below). That shows that Geo did cover reports of his abduction.

However, in this context it raises further questions that being aware of the abduction could a Press Release of CTD be aired as breaking news 3 days later. Should the viewers not be informed that the Court on Sunday discharged Ghani Aman in all cases and yet CTD in violation of law refused to release him and kept him under arrest and instead issued a press release declaring him a highly wanted terrorist. Such reports are a cause of defamation, intimidation and humiliation for the victims.

Hence a higher burden is placed on the media to present a complete picture when such serious allegations are being raised by the State against a citizen. Especially if the media outlet in question itself has reported on the earlier abduction of the citizen in question. I appreciate Geo responding and I hope this interaction leads to more holistic and fair coverage of such issues in future.

Returning to the issue of civil liberties Ghani Aman and Sarmad Mirani's current captivity by CTD is illegal and in violation of Court Orders.

The court in #Karachi released the abducted activists Ghani Aman and Sarmad Mirani, only for police and plainclothes officers to seize them again—both were abducted from the courthouse in full view of lawyers and family. What a sham of a state: it fears its own citizens, curses them for its own lawlessness, and acts like a mafia with no regard for the law of the land. This is how Sindh is treated. Shameful.
