🚨 As the Ebola outbreak spreads in #DRCongo, coordinated action is critical.
WFP is working closely with the Government of DRC, @WHO and partners to facilitate the movement of frontline responders, medical supplies, telecommunications equipment and essential cargo.
How can we measure the state of democracy around the world?
Measuring democracy is challenging. It has many dimensions, and researchers assess them in different ways. No single source of data captures the full picture, so we present data from several of them.
These include Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem; shown in the map here), the Lexical Index, Freedom House, and the Bertelsmann Transformation Index.
Some of these data sources focus on broad characteristics of political systems to identify which countries are democracies at all. Others use expert surveys to assess smaller differences in the degree of democracy.
Our colleagues Mojmír Vinkler and @lucasrodesg recently updated more than 250 of our democracy charts with the latest available data from our sources, which now include data for 2025.
🇪🇺 Do you know how the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism works?
When disasters strike, the EU helps coordinate emergency response efforts for countries in need.
Watch to see how it works in practice ⬇️
Five children — several of them babies — exposed to Ebola were discharged from a treatment center in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Bunia, after testing negative twice for the virus https://t.co/pfe3wE0ZMd
“In the Great Lakes region, one of the most densely populated regions in Africa, border closures are particularly impractical. Communities routinely cross borders for trade, healthcare, education and family interactions through both formal and informal routes. Restrictive measures may therefore drive movement underground, weaken surveillance and reduce transparency. By contrast, coordinated cross-border surveillance, harmonized reporting systems, rapid information sharing, and joint investigations among neighboring countries are more likely to sustainably reduce transmission risks.” #Ebola

The new Guidance helps authorities anticipate, prepare for and respond to extreme heat – from early warning systems and risk communication to cooling spaces, support for older people and those most at risk, and better preparedness in health and care services.
Our ambition is bold: zero heat-related deaths. We have the knowledge. We have the roadmap. Together, we can achieve it.
Grateful to Germany for hosting today’s launch and for its continued support to the WHO European Centre for Environment, Climate Change and Health in Bonn, which led this important work.
I also thank 🇪🇺 Commissioner Hoekstra and his Directorate-General for Climate Action for providing funding for this vital work.

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨
#Hantavirus update: the UK government has reported a confirmed case in Tristan de Cunha, in a person who was previously considered a probable case with exposure on MV Hondius.
As of 10 June, the total number of cases remains 13, including three deaths. No new deaths were reported in over a month, since 2nd May.
Under the African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Health Partnership, Africa CDC convened partners for the Kick-Off Meeting of the #TeamEurope Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and One Health Workforce Strengthening.
Bringing together the @EU_Commission, the EDCTP association, ICARS, @ECDC_EU, @ASLM_News and technical experts, the meeting marked the start of coordinated implementation to strengthen Africa’s response to AMR through a One Health approach.
By aligning priorities, defining roles, and establishing a shared roadmap, partners are advancing collective efforts to protect and support Africa’s #HealthSecurity and Sovereignty agenda.

⚠️Three months after warning that the Middle East crisis could push millions more people into hunger, new analysis shows that the fallout is already having deep and long-lasting effects.
Vulnerable families far from the center of the crisis are being hit the hardest.

As we increase the pace in our implementation of decentralization strategy for the #Ebola response, it was encouraging progress to see the scaling of lab capacity
Still so much more to do - we keep pushing
WHO Rapid Risk Assessment on #Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda:
The risk assessment has been revised:
🔴 Very high at the national level in #DRC
🟠 High for #Uganda
🟠 High for countries sharing land borders with DRC and Uganda
🔵 Low for the rest of the Africa region and at the global level
The risk in DRC remains very high, because:
⚠️ The outbreak has continued to expand rapidly in terms of numbers of cases and geographical spread with more areas affected
⚠️ Epidemiological links and the full chain of transmission are not yet clearly established, and the source of the outbreak remains under investigation
⚠️ Ongoing conflict restricts movement of frontline responders and surveillance teams
⚠️ Community fear and misinformation hinder case detection, contact tracing, and isolation, and potentially facilitate disease spread
⚠️ Limited healthcare infrastructure and delays in laboratory confirmation, although these are being scaled up by DRC, with support of partners
WHO continues to support DRC to put an end to this outbreak https://t.co/hb3BcB531k
Bacterial #AMR directly caused an estimated 1.14 million deaths in 2021 and could cause up to 39 million deaths by 2050 without urgent action.
AMR is not only a future concern. It is an urgent global health threat.
A moment of hope in the #Ebola response.
Today, in Mongbwalu, Ituri, the province at the centre of the outbreak in #DRC, the first survivor there was discharged from care and reunited with his community. In Nyankunde, eight patients were released today, too.
Their recovery is a testament to their strength and the dedication of health workers providing lifesaving care under challenging conditions. It is also a reminder that many people can survive Ebola when they receive care early and safely.
