We've talked a lot about this on the Pod, but the Great SaaS Meltdown has started and there's no going back.

What exactly is happening?

In short, hi growth, low/no profitability SaaS is no longer a winning strategy because the big question mark is the durability of that growth in the short term and, because of AI, the lack of profits in the long term. Every SaaS company has sold the dream (to investors and employees) that they will growth quickly now, and harvest lots of cash later. With AI, this assumption may be completely out the window.

Now the threshold question is whether their growth will be overtaken by a much cheaper AI-developed solution?

If you are a venture supported SaaS startup and are a legacy Heuristics+APIs+CRUD product, it is likely that a new AI oriented workflow is coming for you.

Investors in private markets can see this now and think that money to fund short term growth will not be rewarded. Investors in public markets no longer believe long term profitability is possible. They would rather pivot into something they think is more resilient.

This is a change in the risk calculus that has existed for the past 15 years and why the chart below is the chart below.

NEWS: Tesla has revealed that in Q2 2024, they recorded one crash for every 6.88 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology, their best Q2 number ever. For drivers who were not using Autopilot technology, Tesla recorded one crash for every 1.45 million miles driven.

By comparison, the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA (from 2022) shows that in the US there was an automobile crash approximately every 670,000 miles.

Here's my conversation with Kevin Spacey (@KevinSpacey), a two-time Oscar winning actor, who has created powerful haunting performances of characters who often embody the dark side of human nature.

As I've said before, I will talk to everyone, with empathy and with backbone. I won't whitewash their sins, but I won't reduce them to a worst-possible-caricature of their sins either. This is what outrage mobs and click-bait journalists too often do, rushing to judgment before the facts are in. I will try to do better than that: to respect due process in service of the truth. And I hope to have the courage to always think independently, and to speak honestly and with compassion, even when the eyes of the outrage mob are on me.

We discuss the allegations in this conversation and reference further details. Briefly: 7 years ago, Kevin Spacey was canceled, when Anthony Rapp made a sexual allegation against him, and then filed a civil lawsuit seeking $40 million dollars. In this trial and all civil and criminal trials that followed, Kevin was acquitted. He has never been found guilty nor liable in the court of law.

Again, my goal is to understand human beings, at their best and at their worst. And the hope is such understanding leads to more compassion and wisdom in the world.

I will make mistakes, and when I do, I will work hard to improve.
