At #AIforGood, H.E. @honkabogo, #Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for #ICT and #DigitalEconomy, speaks about the #SiliconSavannah and the bottom up transformation agenda. Kenya have 1450 facilities to be used as training centres, and to loan equipment, giving Kenyans access to computers in order to do digital business.

His Ministry has also identified 22,000 #government services to be digitised, and are putting down 100,000 kms of fibre optic across the country, and using #satellite connectivity.

Sovereignty today is about more than borders. It is as much about who controls your access to your #data and #communications infrastructure.

For @CARICOMorg, building its own #satellite infrastructure is essential. But it does not need to start from scratch- and it does not need to look to the #US and #UK for the answers.

Partners across the #GlobalSouth are showing what is possible in #space, and the #Caribbean should learn from them.

#Mauritius launched a cube satellite through the @UNOOSA– @JAXA_en #KiboCUBE programme. The Dominican Republic is working directly with India’s @ISRO. #Rwanda is building a full satellite assembly and testing facility. The #UAE has become a leader in space science and recently put its first astronaut on the #ISS - @Astro_Alneyadi.

Did you know that the #Caribbean has five shared #satellite slots registered with the @ITU?

They are like real estate in space, reserved for use by the region as a whole.

Few regions in the world have this kind of shared orbital #infrastructure. It is a unique starting point for collective satellite development - supporting regional #communications, climate #resilience, emergency response, and secure #data access.

As #Barbados PM and outgoing @CARICOMorg Chair @miaamormottley stressed at #49HGC, sovereignty today means being able to control your #information and generate your own content. These shared assets give #CARICOM the chance to do that, together.
