An indicator of healthy diets is proposed for the SDGs! The great thing is that it's possible now to measure easily, at low cost. This new paper describes how it has been done:

I really like this framework for holistically tracking food system performance. Food systems must:
• Provide healthy, affordable diets
• Protect the environment
• Sustain livelihoods equitably
• Be resilient to shocks
• Have effective governance

Food systems are essential for human life. But they can also cause problems. Our new report shows where countries are doing well and where they can improve. All countries have unique successes and challenges.

🌿Africa has abundant indigenous food resources that support nutrition and health. "Before we talk about what more we can do, how do we take care of what we already have?" -Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, Minister of Health, Malawi #ANH2023
So pleased to see the #DQQ highlighted in this East Africa Nutrition Surveillance workshop - as a feasible way to collect diet data routinely in the population

What makes up a healthy diet? Is a diversity of food groups enough?
Principal Investigator at the Global Diet Quality Project @AnnaWHerforth sat down with Caitlin Welsh (@welshce) & @FAONorthAmerica's @LM_Phillips on #ResetTheTable to discuss: https://t.co/hUqPJnOl0w
This is huge. New preprint with first ever data on the state of food systems worldwide.
50 indicators across diets, nutrition & health; environment, natural resources & production; livelihoods, poverty & equity; governance; & resilience & sustainability.

@SwissDevCoop@fiblorg@Afsafrica@SWISSAID Such important work. 👏👏 "two main problems: the lack of seed availability and of market access" - this aligns very much with my experience with farmers growing traditional African veg in Tanzania! #traditionalfoods#NUS
@PMenonIFPRI@TJKrupnik@Sieg_SAS@CIMMYT Fascinating! I definitely did not imagine this, but glad #DQQ is sparking conversations linking agriculture and nutrition!
Thinking about all those food groups shows the importance of diversification. I wonder if other underutilized & neglected foods came up in the discussion🌿
Different dietary data collection tools have different purposes. For prevalence of consumption of specific food groups or indicators for diet quality monitoring, the recently developed Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ) by @AnnaWHerforth and team works well.

Thanks to Betül Uyar for getting this paper out, and all co-authors who did the fieldwork in Ethiopia, Vietnam, and Solomon Islands, including @chrisvogliano@EliseTalsma@TesfayeHailuBe1 !
New results! The Diet Quality Questionnaire #DQQ , a 5-min survey module, was validated against a 24-hour recall standard method. High similarity in food group consumption and diet quality indicators from the 2 methods. https://t.co/HPeuMlV4hQ
